Where to eat on Moganshan, village by village

Only Yucun has a street of places to eat. Inside the gate there is one summit street; in the guesthouse villages your host's kitchen is the restaurant. Here is what the dated record names, village by village.

“Eat where you sleep” is the standard answer, and our own village pages give it. It is half right, and the half that is wrong costs people dinner. Where to eat on Moganshan depends on which side of the scenic area gate you are on, and which village you sleep in. Only one place at the foot of the mountain has a street of restaurants. Inside the gate there is one summit street. In the guesthouse villages, the kitchen of the house you booked is, most nights, the restaurant.

Moganshan (莫干山) is a bamboo mountain and former hill station in Deqing County (德清县), Huzhou (湖州), Zhejiang, about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. It is not Moganshan Road in Shanghai, the M50 art district, which owns many of the search results for this question. Nearly all the mountain’s restaurants sit outside the ticketed scenic area, in the villages below it.

This page is written from published sources. Nobody from this site has eaten at any place named here, and none of them is ranked. Where a source is a promotion account or a booking listing, it is cited as that: proof that a place existed on a date, not that it is good.

Where you are What the record names Latest dated source What to plan
Yucun and Mogan Yujie noodle shops with street numbers, a rebuilt street of more than 60 brands November 2025 Lunch on foot; dinner too, surest on a summer weekend

Where to eat on Moganshan: Yucun and Mogan Yujie

Yucun (庾村) is the market town at the foot of the mountain, where the transfer centre is and the road up begins. It is the one place on Moganshan where you can walk out without a plan and find lunch.

Until recently that lunch was a bowl of noodles. A 2025 column in The Paper said visitor spending used to stop at the square: a bowl of noodles, a cup of coffee, a few souvenirs. A 2018 account, written before the rebuild, counted pig liver noodles (猪肝面) among the town’s three treasures, with sesame cakes and cloth shoes.

The noodle shops have their own page. Moganshan noodles sets out the four the Chinese record names, three of them on Huangfu East Road (黄郛东路) and Yuxin North Street (庾信北街), and how old each mention is. Go before noon. They are breakfast and lunch places. One small trap for anyone reading signs: locals write the town’s name as 于村 on noodle shop boards, a simpler character than 庾村. It is the same town.

What changed is Mogan Yujie (莫干·庾街), the rebuilt street along the Fuxi (阜溪) stream. Phase one opened on 1 May 2024 and phase two, the waterside shopping street and market, on 1 October 2025. By November 2025 it counted more than 60 brands and a canteen for the young people who work there.

Many of those brands came from Shanghai and further afield. The operator also brought in Deqing names, Tide News reported: Goldfish Mum (金鱼妈妈), Dongdafang (东大方) and Zaidiji (在地集), which it called local produce and food brands. Of the three, Goldfish Mum is the one we can confirm is a restaurant, with a second branch up on the summit street. If you want the county’s own cooking on Yujie, start with these.

Inside the gate: Yinshan Street

Yinshan Street (荫山街) is the old hill station’s high street, where the shuttle from the transfer centre sets visitors down. Eating there means having paid to enter. Tickets and entry explains the gate, and the shuttle guide the last bus down, which decides how late lunch can run.

The written record on its restaurants is thin. No news report we found names one. Two restaurant listings do. The Yinshan Street branch of Goldfish Mum (金鱼妈妈山野·食趣), at No. 367, has reviews running from August 2025 to 10 June 2026, the most recent sign that anything on the street is trading. Its listed dishes are the mountain’s own: braised dried bamboo shoots, a free range chicken soup, bream from Mogan lake (莫干湖), seasonal wild greens and handmade tofu.

The second, Dongwu Jiujia (东吴酒家), has had no review on its listing since June 2023, so we can’t say it still trades. One older review, from 2016, is worth reading anyway. The diner says the staff pushed the “wild game” (野味) hard. The stone frog section below explains why that matters.

The guesthouse villages: your host’s kitchen

Away from Yucun, every village we cover looks the same on paper. The record names few restaurants, often none. Most guesthouses cook: in our census of the listings we hold, at least three in four list a restaurant.

Xiantan is the one with somewhere to walk to. People’s Daily counted ten restaurants and seven cafés there in June 2023, in a village of 166 guesthouses. That is still not a high street, and the count is more than three years old.

Laoling’s newest place is Chashanli (茶杉里), a tea and coffee house on a tea farm near the metasequoia avenue (水杉大道), which opened formally in October 2026. Its owner is a county heritage bearer for the making of Mogan Huangya (莫干黄芽), the mountain’s yellow bud tea, and customers can pick leaf and make tea there. The report gave no hours or prices. Mogan Huangya explains the tea.

Houwu’s food event is a village banquet, not a restaurant: the New Year pig feast, held five times by 2025, for which the village plans a banquet hall. The fifth sat 123 tables in the village hall on 16 December 2024, weeks before Spring Festival rather than during it.

What to order: the dishes the record names

In 1928 Zhou Shoujuan (周瘦鹃), then editor of the literary page of the Shanghai paper Shenbao (申报), spent a summer on the mountain and kept the menu in his Mountain Jottings (山中琐记): mushroom soup with egg white, fried mandarin fish, smoked chicken, chicken brain tofu, and pork steamed in rice flour on bamboo leaves (竹叶粉蒸肉). A Xinmin Evening News writer reported in January 2026 finding that pork at a country restaurant near Yucai Road (育才路), in Moganshan town.

What is on the table depends on the month. Winter shoots (冬笋) are dug in the cold months before they break the soil. In December 2023 Deqing News followed a villager in Ziling (紫岭村) up the slope with a hoe; her shoots went to her own guesthouse kitchen. Winter on Moganshan covers the winter crop and spring on Moganshan the spring one.

The meal the Xinmin writer calls unforgettable was not in a restaurant. More than twenty years ago, with ice on the road up, the writer was turned back and taken into a farmhouse in a village halfway up, within reach of the Laoling reservoir. The family cut salt pork from a leg hanging over the stove, dug winter shoots in the bamboo outside the door, and simmered both in an earthenware pot of spring water. Ask your host for it in winter.

Stone frog: ask before you order

The dish to ask about is stone frog (石鸡). The name means stone chicken. It is a frog: the spiny frog of mountain streams (棘胸蛙). The Xinmin writer ate it stir fried with ginger and garlic, at a restaurant up a slope west of Yucun square, and called it a calling card of the mountain.

Caught wild, it is protected. Zhejiang Online reported in 2018 that the species is on the national list of protected wildlife of ecological, scientific or social value (the “三有” list) and is a key protected species in Zhejiang; that catching it wild is an offence; and that farming or selling it needs a licence from the city forestry authority. Farmed frog is legal. The same report gives three years from tadpole to market.

Ask whether it is farmed (养殖的). If the answer is vague, or the menu says wild (野生), order something else. The same goes for anything sold to you as wild game. At the table, a visitor has no way to check where a wild animal came from.

Evenings, and arriving late

The sources disagree about the evening, because the town changed between them. In 2018 a writer found Yucun silent by 21:00. In September 2025 Hangzhou Daily reported that Mogan Yujie had been named a provincial night economy site (夜经济坐标) by the Zhejiang commerce department. A summer festival had run there on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights for nearly two months, and holiday evenings drew more than 5,000 people a day.

Both can be true. A summer weekend in Yucun now has an evening. A Tuesday in January may not, and no source we can cite gives the street’s winter hours. Outside Yucun and Xiantan, plan on dinner at your guesthouse.

What the record will not tell you

Prices. No tier 1 or tier 2 source prints the price of a dish on Moganshan. The per head figures on booking listings are fed by users, and we never quote them. Paying for things on Moganshan covers how to pay a small bill.

Hours. They appear only on listings, so we print none.

Whether it is still open. No source can promise that. The tables give the date of each mention. On the day, a recent review on a map app settles it.
