Privacy

Visit Moganshan is a travel guide, not a booking platform. We collect very little, we sell none of it, and this page says exactly what happens to what we do hold.

Who we are

Visit Moganshan is published by BeyondBorder Group Ltd, a company registered in Hong Kong. BeyondBorder Group Ltd is the data controller for this site and for messages sent to us through it. How the site is funded, and whether we hold any commercial interest in a property we write about, is set out on the About page.

What we collect

There are three ways your information reaches us, and only three.

What you send us. If you write to us, pitch a property, correct a page or make a trade or media enquiry, we receive whatever you put in that message: your name, your email address, the company you work for if you mention it, and the content of the message itself.

What your browser sends our host. Serving a page leaves a server log entry. That entry can include your IP address, the page requested, the time of the request, the referring page, and your browser and device type. These logs are produced by our hosting provider as part of delivering and protecting the site. We use them to keep the site up, to size images and pages for the devices that actually load them, and to investigate abuse.

What our analytics counts. If you are reading from outside mainland China, the page loads Google Analytics, which sets two cookies on your device and records the page you opened, roughly where in the world you were, how you arrived and what kind of device you used. It is aggregate measurement: it tells us a guide was read 400 times last week and that most of those readers came from a search, not who any of them were. Readers inside mainland China are not measured at all, and neither is anyone whose location we cannot determine. The whole of it, including how to switch it off, is set out in the cookie policy.

What we do not collect

We do not run advertising trackers, remarketing pixels or social media tracking scripts. We do not buy contact lists. We do not build profiles of readers, we do not sell or rent anything about you, and we do not ask for special category information such as health, religion or political views. Our analytics property has Google Signals and every advertising feature switched off, so nothing measured here follows you anywhere else or feeds an advertising audience. Beyond the two analytics cookies, the site stores nothing on your device, which is set out in full in thecookie policy.

We take no payments on this site. There is no checkout here, so we never see a card number, and any booking you make happens on a hotel or operator system under that company's own policy.

Why we use it

  • To answer you. A message you send is used to reply and to follow up on that conversation.
  • To keep the guide accurate. A correction you send may change a page. We do not publish your name or contact details when we act on one unless you have asked us to credit you.
  • To run and defend the site. Server logs support uptime, performance work, and blocking abuse such as scraping and attempted attacks.
  • To decide what to write next. Analytics tells us which guides are read and which are opened and abandoned, which is what a page rewrite is prioritised on. It is never used to single out an individual reader.
  • To meet obligations. Correspondence connected to a commercial or contractual matter is kept as long as accounting and legal duties require.

We do not use what you send us for automated decision making, and we do not add correspondents to a mailing list on the strength of a single enquiry.

We process personal data under Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Where a reader is in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, we also apply the standards of the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR, and we rely on these bases:

  • Legitimate interests for replying to enquiries, keeping the guide accurate, operating and securing the site, and measuring which pages are read so we know what to improve. Our interest in running a working, factual travel guide is balanced against the very small amount of information involved, and the measurement is aggregate, carries no advertising use and can be refused with any of the controls listed in thecookie policy.
  • Contract where we are dealing with a trade, media or commercial arrangement and need your details to carry it out.
  • Consent where you have specifically asked to receive something from us. You can withdraw it at any time and we act on that immediately.
  • Legal obligation where the law requires us to keep or produce records.

Who sees it

Inside our company, only the people who need your message in order to act on it. Outside it, only service providers who make the site work, each bound by contract and confidentiality: our hosting and content delivery provider, our email provider, Google as the provider of our analytics, and, where a matter requires it, professional advisers such as lawyers and accountants.

We will disclose information where the law compels us to, and to protect the rights or safety of readers, our staff or the public. Beyond that, nobody sees it. We do not share reader correspondence with hotels or operators, including when your message is about them, unless you ask us to put you in touch.

Where it is held

The site is hosted on servers operated by our provider and delivered worldwide from an edge network, so a page you load may be served from a location near you. Email and correspondence are held on providers whose infrastructure sits in Hong Kong, the European Economic Area and the United States. Analytics data is processed by Google, which means it leaves Hong Kong and is held on Google infrastructure including in the United States.

That means information may be transferred outside your own country. Where personal data of readers in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area is transferred, we rely on the providers' standard contractual clauses and equivalent safeguards, and we keep the volume of data involved as small as the service allows.

How long we keep it

  • General correspondence: up to two years from our last exchange, then deleted.
  • Commercial, trade and media correspondence: for the life of the arrangement plus seven years, which is what accounting and tax rules require of us.
  • Server logs: retained by our hosting provider for a short operational window, typically no more than 30 days, unless an entry is needed for a live security investigation.
  • Analytics: event level records are kept by Google for no more than 14 months, after which only the aggregate reports remain. The two cookies on your own device expire two years after your last visit, and clearing your browser's cookies removes them immediately.

When a retention period ends, the record is deleted. We do not keep anything on the theory that it may prove useful one day.

Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • confirm whether we hold personal data about you, and give you a copy of it;
  • correct anything inaccurate;
  • delete what we hold, where no legal duty requires us to keep it;
  • restrict or object to how we use it;
  • provide it in a portable form; and
  • withdraw consent you previously gave, without affecting what we did before you withdrew it.

Write to privacy@visitmoganshan.com. We answer within 30 days, and there is no charge. We may ask you to confirm your identity before we release a copy of anything, because handing your data to somebody who claims to be you would be the worse failure.

If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data in Hong Kong, to the Information Commissioner's Office in the United Kingdom, or to your own national supervisory authority in the European Economic Area. We would rather you told us first, but it is your right either way.

Children

This site is written for adults planning travel. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.

Other sites

We link out to hotels, operators, rail and airline booking systems, official tourism bodies and map services. Once you follow a link, you are on somebody else's site under their privacy policy and their cookie practices, over which we have no control and for which we take no responsibility. It is worth reading theirs before you book.

Changes

When this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it, and the change ships in the same release as whatever prompted it. If a change materially affects how we treat information you have already sent us, we will say so on this page rather than leave you to spot the difference.
