A Moganshan cafe search turns up two very different rock settings. The cave cafe occupies a former mine at Tongguanshan (铜官山), in Hecun (何村). Gelien Coffee (格里恩咖啡), in Wusi village (五四村), spreads out in an open quarry. Choose the enclosed space for the rock overhead, or the quarry for its lawn and view of the cut faces. Both locations appear in Deqing News’s June 2026 directory; that is a dated listing, not confirmation for today.
Moganshan (莫干山) is in Deqing County (德清县), Huzhou (湖州), Zhejiang (浙江), north of Hangzhou (杭州) and inland from Shanghai (上海). These are village destinations in the wider mountain area. Moganshan Road in Shanghai, home to the M50 art district, is a different place. Start with our things to do guide if you are still deciding what belongs in the trip.

This comparison comes from the Chinese written record. We have not visited either cafe, tasted its coffee or confirmed its operation by phone. The record establishes the settings and opening history; it does not supply a current, authoritative price or a dependable timetable for your visit.
Which Moganshan cafe fits the afternoon?
| Place | Chinese search name | Setting | Reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| The cave at Tongguanshan | 遇见地心·洞穴咖啡 | Former mine in Hecun | Enclosed rock space and evidence of earlier mining |
| Gelien at Wusi | 格里恩咖啡 | Open quarry with lawn and wooden buildings | An outdoor stop with room to look across the rock face |
The cave venue’s name, Yujian Dixin (遇见地心), means roughly “Encounter the Earth’s Interior”. Keep the characters when saving it. They distinguish the business from a general search for caves around Moganshan. Gelien is a transliteration of its Chinese name, not a verified English trading name.

For a drink between buses, a destination cafe adds another journey to organise. Consider Yucun (庾村) instead. If the rock setting is the reason for going, choose one cafe first and keep the other optional. Leave enough flexibility to stay longer if you find a comfortable seat.
Tongguanshan: what the miners recognised
Former workers returned after the conversion. Deqing News reported that 40 retired copper and iron miners visited the converted site in May 2025. They recognised the rock marks and the course of the workings. The report says the cafe began operating that April, with an artificial waterfall and a viewing platform. It gives no opening day.

An earlier report places the site more precisely at Shuiwuli (水坞里), on Tongguanshan. On 1 April it was still being built. Cai Zhexiao (蔡哲枭), the operator named in that account, described plans for the waterfall and platform, along with improvements to the approach road. The team had already worked on the quarry cafe at Wusi.

The descriptions emphasise different things. People’s Daily Overseas Edition calls it a natural cave and describes stalactites. The local paper foregrounds the mine and the men who worked it. Both describe an adapted visitor space. Neither account is a geological survey, so the safe reading is a cave venue with documented mining use, rather than an untouched underground landscape.

Deqing News has since called it a Hecun copper mine worked in the 1950s (20 June 2025) and a Han dynasty copper mine (20 August 2025); our Hecun guide sets the accounts side by side.

Come to look at how the space has been reused. Don’t read “cave cafe” as permission to explore passages away from the visitor area. Nor does a photograph establish how bright the walking route will be, or whether every part has level access.

Wusi: a quarry made into somewhere to sit
At Gelien, the reporting describes a lawn inside a disused quarry, with wooden buildings and a waterfall. Deqing News found it already receiving customers in late November 2024 and named Gu Xuesong (谷雪松) as its operator. The description presents an outdoor leisure space, with the rock face as its backdrop.

The county paper returned to both businesses in its cafe directory of 17 June 2026. It gives Gelien’s address as 88 Hutangli (湖塘里88号), Wusi village, and describes dark rock, grass and red roofed wooden buildings. Compare that address with the map result before sharing it with a driver. Sending only the village name leaves the entrance uncertain.

The quarry is the choice for an afternoon outdoors.
Rain changes that choice. Get a clear answer about covered seating before setting off. A wooden building in a picture does not tell you how many customers can sit inside it. Equally, a lawn is not evidence of a supervised play area or an accessible route across the whole site.
We have no basis for ranking the drinks at either business. The reporting is about places and rural enterprise. It tells us little about the coffee. If you mainly want a good cup, request the current menu before committing to the journey.

The younger operators in the 2025 report
In May 2025, People’s Daily Overseas Edition reported that more than 70 percent of Deqing’s rural cafe operators were born in the 1990s, including the group born after 1995. No sample or survey method accompanies the figure. It describes the county’s trade in that report, not the founders of these two cafes.

The same report follows former working buildings into their new use as cafes. At these two venues the extraction sites are part of the attraction. The reporting does not establish the quality of the conservation work.
Coffee is not the only way into the local landscape. Our guide to Mogan Huangya tea (莫干黄芽) follows the crop and its makers. It is another option if you would rather learn about what grows here.

What to confirm before leaving your accommodation
Once you have chosen the setting, settle the arrival details before booking the car.
The June 2026 directory is the latest dated listing cited here for both cafes. It cannot tell you that either will admit visitors on your chosen day. We found no current official tariff or operating notice that we could validate, so there is no price or timetable here. That omission does not mean admission is free. Do not assume a scenic area ticket includes either cafe, or that a cafe package includes the scenic area.
| Detail | Question to settle |
|---|---|
| Admission and drinks | Adult and child charges, included drinks and any minimum spend |
| Opening | Whether the venue is receiving visitors on your date and when admission stops |
| Arrival | Current entrance pin, parking point and any separate transfer arrangement |
| Access | Steps, steep sections and the route between arrival point, seating and toilets |
| Weather | Which seating remains usable in rain and what happens if access is suspended |
Send the Chinese venue name and date to the business’s contact channel, or ask your accommodation host to pass on the request. Use a short message that is easy to translate: “Please send the entrance location, total admission price and last admission time for that day.” A generic brochure or a reposted photograph does not answer whether the business is open that day. If an admission package appears on a booking screen, read what it includes before paying. A drink credit and a freely chosen drink are not necessarily the same offer. If you cannot get a current answer, keep the cafe optional and avoid paying for a special journey just to reach it.
Arrange the return when you arrange the outward journey. Save the exact entrance pin offline, then agree a place and time to meet your driver afterwards. Do not assume a car dropping you at one entrance can wait there, or that a different map result for the same village will lead to the same place. Our getting around guide covers the wider transport decisions. We have not measured a route between the cafes, so this comparison gives no drive time or walking shortcut.
For a wheelchair user, a pushchair or anyone who finds steps difficult, ask for a recent photograph of the route from the drop off point to the table. The words “viewing platform” say nothing about how you reach it. If the reply only shows the seating area, request the approach too. Until that is clear, neither venue should be the fixed centre of an accessible day out.
