Three airports can put you on this mountain. Between the quickest of them and the slowest sits two to three hours, depending on how each end of your trip goes. That gap is set by geography rather than by how well you plan. Better to know it while the flight is still a browser tab.
The destination does not move. Moganshan stands in Deqing County, part of Huzhou prefecture in Zhejiang Province, with Hangzhou about 60 km south of it and Shanghai 200 to 240 km back. Every route in ends the same way, at a high-speed station called Deqing followed by about half an hour of road. All that changes is how much of your day disappears before you reach that station.
The short answer, one line each.
- Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA). The easy one. The rail station is at the airport, so you walk across and ride 63 to 80 minutes.
- Shanghai Pudong (PVG). The hard one. You cross Shanghai before the journey starts, which is where the four hours come from.
- Hangzhou Xiaoshan (HGH). The closest, and more than two hours ahead of Pudong by car.
One booking warning that costs people a day. Book the train to Deqing (德清). A station called Moganshan exists on a different line and does not serve the mountain. Get that wrong and you land at Wukang, 20 km off, and finish by road.
The three airports compared
Read every figure below as a whole journey: the walk, the wait, the train, the road transfer and the last stretch to the door. A Friday in July runs longer, and so does any national holiday.

The last column is the one that decides your evening, and the flight schedule has little to do with it. Two closing times settle it: the last shuttle from Deqing leaves at 16:00, and the scenic-area transfer centers shut at 18:00. Those two are the only hard numbers on this page. Everything else moves.
The 18:00 close is also where the midday cutoff in the Hongqiao row comes from, and you should check it. Count back from 18:00 through a 3h30 door-to-door and an hour for immigration and baggage, and the last safe landing is 13:30. Midday is that with an hour of slack.
Each airport in turn now, easiest first.
Hongqiao: walk to the train
The airport and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station sit on the same site. You clear immigration and then walk to your train, without leaving the complex. No taxi, no crossing the city between the plane and the platform. That is why people call this trip easy.
Follow the signs for the railway station rather than the metro, and allow more time than the signage suggests if you are pushing two cases.
From there, 13 direct services a day run to Deqing. The ride takes 63 to 80 minutes and a second class seat costs roughly RMB 61 to 110, so the train you pick moves the price more than you might expect.

Those three are only a sample of the day, and the last one carries a warning. The 17:39 reaches Deqing at 18:42, after the shuttle has finished and the transfer centers have shut. Only the first two land you inside the working day.
Two things slow this down more than the map suggests. The station is huge and security queues build fast. And a Chinese rail ticket is tied to the document that bought it, so book on the passport you will carry.
At Deqing you still have about 30 minutes of road. The Y1, a tourist shuttle bus, runs from the coach center beside the station for RMB 10 in 30 to 40 minutes. Pudong: the airport that costs you a day
Pudong sits on the far east edge of Shanghai. Moganshan is southwest of the city. So before the 63 to 80 minute train even starts, you have to cross Shanghai to Hongqiao.
That crossing runs 50 to 70 minutes by car. Maglev then metro is faster on paper and slower in practice, once you add two suitcases and two changes.
Then put an international arrival in front of the whole thing. Immigration and baggage reclaim, plus, if you are entering without a visa, the check on the scheme you are traveling under. Those rules are on our visa-free entry to China page. Only then do the four hours start.

Most travelers read that row and go anyway. A room near Hongqiao costs less than the afternoon it saves. Every route out of the city is on the Shanghai to Moganshan page.
Xiaoshan: closest, and mostly overlooked
Two airports down, both in Shanghai. Xiaoshan sits beside the other city and is the nearest of the three to Moganshan. It hardly appears in English-language advice about the mountain, which is an oversight rather than a verdict on the airport. If your flights are not booked yet, this is the only section on the page that can still change something.
The arithmetic is the argument. By car Xiaoshan is 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 quicker than Pudong. By rail it is still an hour and a half ahead.

The Hangzhou East to Deqing leg is the quick part: 13 to 17 minutes over 35 km, 16 services a day, roughly RMB 16 to 67. It runs on the Nanjing to Hangzhou high-speed line, open since 2013, so none of it depends on recent construction.
Getting from the terminal to Hangzhou East is the one leg to settle before you land. Rail and taxi both do it, and the airport information desk will point you at whichever is running when you arrive.

If you land late
This is the section that decides whether tonight works. Two things shut down while you are still in the air, and neither is on your itinerary. Work it out now, on a laptop, not at 19:00 in an arrivals hall with a dying phone.
The Y1 shuttle’s last departure from Deqing is 16:00. Seven services run in a day, and that is the whole timetable: 07:30, 08:40, 09:40, 10:40, 13:00, 15:00 and 16:00. Nothing runs between 10:40 and 13:00 either.
The scenic-area transfer centers close at 18:00. Private vehicles cannot drive inside the core scenic area. Everyone changes at Yucun, Fatou or Houwu, and all three operate 08:00 to 18:00. After that, a bed inside the boundary cannot be reached by road at all.
Whether that rule applies to you is not something a map tells you. Many guesthouse villages sit outside the boundary, where a taxi reaches the door at any hour. Ask the property which side it is on.

Later trains than G1419 run, but that one already arrives at 18:42, after both closing times. Anything later is a Wukang night by default.

There is a fourth option. It is the best one and almost nobody books it: put night one in Wukang or Shanghai on purpose, and the problem never arrives.
Eat before you go up, wherever you sleep. Chinese reporting notes the Moganshan villages have no evening economy, meaning no night market and very little late-night food. Reaching a village hungry at 21:00 happens often enough to plan around.
Cars and private transfers
A car has come up in every section above. It removes the changes. It does not remove the boundary. Your driver stops at a transfer center like everyone else, and after 18:00 the system has shut.
It earns its cost in four situations:
- A family with luggage, where the shuttle means four cases on a bus
- A group of four, where the fare splits and stops looking expensive
- Any arrival outside shuttle hours
- A guesthouse in an outlying village, off the shuttle route
Book through the property rather than at the curb, and ask which transfer center serves them. They field that question every week, and their rate will beat the one quoted at an arrivals hall. Prices swing widely by operator and season, so get the figure in writing before the car is booked.
