Two nights on a mountain 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. Moganshan is in Deqing County, Huzhou prefecture, Zhejiang Province, about 60 km north of Hangzhou. The Moganshan in Putuo, Shanghai, is a road and an art district, and it is the one the search results keep offering you.
It works as a weekend getaway from Shanghai, and the reason is the train. Two nights in Moganshan, Friday evening out and Sunday afternoon back, is the trip most people take.
It is also the most expensive and most crowded way to do it.
The shape of a Moganshan weekend
You leave Hongqiao on a Friday evening train, reach Deqing inside 80 minutes, and take a taxi up the hill in the dark. Saturday is your full day. Sunday morning is yours, then you come back after lunch.

Both are estimates, and both include getting to Hongqiao, the train and the transfer. Double them for the round trip: 5 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours of moving, spread over three days instead of one. That spread is the argument for two nights. One night works, but it rushes both travel days. Shanghai to Moganshan has the full breakdown.
Friday: the two clocks that decide your evening
The train is the easy part. Thirteen direct services a day run from Hongqiao to Deqing in 63 to 80 minutes, second class fares roughly RMB 61 to 110. Pick your Friday departure off the live Hongqiao to Deqing timetable once you know the answer to the next two paragraphs, because the hard part comes after you get off.
Clock one is the Y1 tourist shuttle from the Deqing Coach Center. Seven departures a day, and the last one leaves at 16:00.
Clock two is the transfer centers. No private vehicle goes inside the scenic area, so everyone changes at Yucun, Fatou or Houwu, and those three run 08:00 to 18:00.
Your Friday comes down to which of the two you can still catch.

The itinerary below uses the third row, because that is the train people leaving an office catch. It works, so long as your bed is not inside the scenic area, and very few are. A taxi reaches the door in 30 minutes for RMB 100.

A second Friday warning, and it is about food. Chinese domestic reporting records no evening economy in these villages: no night market, little late-night food. Arrive at 19:30 and the village is shut. Send the guesthouse your train number and ask them to hold dinner.

The Saturday 17:00 line is not padding. The transfer centers stop at 18:00 wherever you are standing. Check the Sunday evening timetable out of Deqing on a booking app before you go, and hold a seat on it.
What to do with Saturday
Tables can hold the timing. They cannot tell you what the day is for. Two things here can, and the first is the bamboo. Forest cover is over 92 percent, mostly moso, and it is a working crop rather than landscaping. The paths are best early, and that alone is the reason to sleep up here. Second, the architecture. About 250 historic villas survive in local mountain stone, built from the 1890s by American and British missionary families and later by Chinese owners. Our villa walking tour suits a slow morning.
Sword Pond, or Jianchi, is the sight most visitors list. In legend the mountain is named for the swordsmiths Mo Ye and Gan Jiang, and the pond is where their blades were quenched. This page does not dress that up as history.
None of these sights keeps published opening hours in English, and the walking times between them depend on where the transfer puts you down. Your guesthouse is the fastest check on both.
Worth knowing before you buy a ticket. The villages and guesthouses sit outside the ticketed core, so a weekend here does not have to include one. Sword Pond and the villa streets are inside it.

Those totals are our arithmetic on the published bands. Nobody sells this as a package. And note what the columns really compare, because the bands split by season and never by day of the week. The right-hand column is a peak-season room, and calling it a measured Saturday premium would be a stretch.
Ticket prices do not agree across sources. One gives RMB 120 online and RMB 130 at the gate. Another gives RMB 50 off-season and RMB 80 in peak. Winter is half price. Check at booking rather than trusting any single number, ours included. Prices checked 5 August 2026.

The weekend problem
None of those numbers are accidents.
Saturday is the worst night of the week to sleep in Moganshan, and the whole county knows it. The weekday and weekend split is severe: weekends and holidays drive the volume, and Mondays are notably quiet. Sector occupancy was about 55 percent in 2024, so beds sit empty midweek while your Saturday costs triple.
Holidays are worse again. High-end occupancy hit 94 percent over the May 2024 holiday, and footfall in Yucun rose 30 to 40 percent above normal during National Day 2025.

The Saturday-to-Monday version is the one most people overlook. One day off, one fewer peak night, and the busiest day on the mountain traded for the quietest. If you can move one thing about this trip, move that. Sunday to Tuesday beats both of them.
