In March and April the forest here gets dug. Bamboo shoots are a crop on this mountain rather than a garnish, and spring is the few weeks when they come out of the ground and onto the menus in the villages below.
The mountain is Moganshan, 60 km north of Hangzhou in Deqing County, part of Huzhou prefecture, Zhejiang Province, and 200 to 240 km out of Shanghai. More than 92 percent of it is forest, nearly all moso bamboo grown and cut as a crop. (Search results also offer Moganshan Road in Shanghai’s Putuo District. Different place.)
Spring is also the season this site recommends most and can support least. Our research holds no published spring temperature here, for any of the three months.
Why we send people here in spring
Operators market two shoulder seasons, spring and clear late autumn. They are not doing it out of generosity. July and August sell themselves, and the other ten months have to be sold.
The numbers underneath are plain enough. A mid-range room sits at RMB 300 to 500 a night through most of spring, against RMB 1,000 or more in July and August. Occupancy across the area averaged about 55 percent in 2024, so beds stand empty somewhere in the year, and our reading is that a spring weekday is where most of them sit.

That is a commercial case. Nobody has handed us a climate one.
The temperature we cannot give you

A year that averages 13.3 °C between a January of 1.4 and a summer of 24.1 has to pass through mild on the way up, and March to May is where that climb happens. Nobody put an instrument on April and published the answer.
Your phone will not close the gap. Most apps resolve a Moganshan forecast to Wukang, the county seat, 20 km off on lower ground, so what comes back is a valley reading. Shoots, and a forest that is being worked
Most of the year you look at this bamboo. In spring people are in it with tools.
Farmers dig the shoots and cut the poles, and both get sold. Close up that leaves fresh diggings, thinned stands and tracks running off the marked path. It is a workplace, and in April it looks like one.
Timing is what nobody can promise you. Shoots move with the weather from year to year, so the harvest is some weeks in March and April rather than a date you can hold a booking against. March is the gamble and April the safer bet, and that ranking is ours.
Guesthouse kitchens buy locally and have shoots on the menu within hours of the digging, so the kitchen where you sleep is the reliable answer rather than a restaurant you booked. For a few weeks the landscape and the dinner are the same thing.
Shoots are one of two things the season is promoted on locally. The other is meadows, which in practice means the cleared and terraced ground between the bamboo rather than an alpine flower show.

March, April and May, one at a time

Weekends and holidays carry the volume all year, and Monday is the emptiest day. Pick the day before the month.
The tea gets picked in the same weeks
The other spring crop here is picked rather than dug. Moganshan’s tea is huangya, a yellow bud tea. Bud teas are a spring crop wherever they are made, because the pick is unopened buds rather than mature leaf, and the bud is only there early. Chinese practice measures that window against Qingming, the tomb-sweeping festival around 4 to 5 April.
The local window moves with the weather rather than the calendar, so a cold March pushes it back a week or two.
April is the month, then, without a fortnight anyone can name in advance. This is not a mountain with a visitor tea garden either. Moganshan yellow bud tea has the grades and where a cup actually comes from.
The week that breaks spring
Everything above argues for April and early May. Here is the exception. China’s May Day holiday is one of two Golden Weeks, and it lands at the strongest point of the season.

Read those two rows carefully. The 94 percent is the high-end segment against a 55 percent baseline covering every property across a year, and the 2026 line counts the county rather than the mountain. Neither is a gate count. Both point one way: a March room in the RMB 300 to 500 band goes past RMB 1,000 that week, and what is left is what nobody else wanted.
So keep the whole first week of May clear. Block 1 to 7 May and you are covered in any year, because the holiday starts on 1 May but its length is set year by year. We expect the weeks either side to behave like ordinary spring, which is inference on our part rather than a published figure.
If the holiday is your only week, come anyway and lock the room in months ahead. Where to stay has the village picture, which counts for more than the property once nothing is left.
What rain does to the paths
No rainfall record is published for this mountain, so treat what follows as the regional pattern. Underfoot it is stone steps and packed earth, and wet, both are slippery. A wet day is not a lost day, but it costs you speed.

The clock cuts the other way from November. By May the light is still good when the gate closes, so the constraint is the timetable rather than the sunset. Ticket prices disagree between published sources, so confirm yours at booking.

That is spring on its own terms. The question most readers actually arrive with is spring or autumn, since those are the two seasons this site pushes. The last column below is our judgment, not a measurement.

Autumn takes the view, spring takes most of the rest, and the best time to visit names both windows rather than picking one. If you want a single date from us: mid-April, on a Monday.
