Plan your trip to Moganshan

China’s visa-free rules expire at the end of 2026.

Everything below is about one mountain: Moganshan, in Deqing County, part of Huzhou prefecture, Zhejiang Province, China, about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. Not Moganshan Road, the Shanghai art district that search results mix with it constantly.

This is the practical half of our Moganshan travel guide: seven decisions, in order.

The pre-trip checklist

Step 1: can you enter China?

Entry got easier over the past two years. There are three routes.

The list started on 1 December 2023 with six countries. Canada and the United Kingdom joined on 17 February 2026, and the stay doubled from 15 to 30 days in November 2024.

The transit rule replaced the 72 and 144-hour regimes on 17 December 2024. It covers 65 ports and 24 provinces and municipalities, including Shanghai and Zhejiang, and you can cross freely between them. That is what makes Moganshan possible on a transit stop.

One caveat sits under all of this. The unilateral regime is currently legislated only to 31 December 2026, and no extension had been announced as of August 2026. Our own read is that a lapse looks unlikely, but unlikely is not a booking policy, so check again if your trip falls in 2027. The China visa-free entry page tracks it country by country.

Step 2: when to come

Summer is the reason Moganshan exists. July and August average 24.1 °C, about 6 to 7 °C cooler than Shanghai and Hangzhou. That gap has been the whole proposition since the 1890s.

The two Golden Weeks, the May Day and National Day holidays, are worth avoiding if your dates can move. High-end guesthouse occupancy reached 94 percent over the May 2024 holiday, and daily footfall in Yucun during National Day 2025 ran 30 to 40 percent above normal. Weekends are busy too, and Mondays run the quietest of the week. The best time to visit page goes month by month.

Step 3: how to get here

Almost everyone arrives by high-speed train to Deqing station. Watch the name. Moganshan railway station, on the Shangqiu to Hefei to Hangzhou line, does not serve the mountain.

Door to door from central Shanghai runs 2 hours 45 to 3 hours 30 by rail, and about an hour and a quarter more from Pudong, at 4 hours to 4 hours 45. Central Hangzhou by car is 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 45. All estimates.

Double those figures and you have your trip length: two nights from Shanghai, one from Hangzhou. A single day out of Shanghai buys a short afternoon against five and a half to seven hours of travel. Getting here has the coach and the drive too.

Step 4: where to stay

This is where the money goes. Moganshan runs on minsu (民宿) rather than hotels. A minsu is a small, owner-run guesthouse, and there were about 1,000 of them as of September 2025, up from one property in 2002. Roughly 80 percent are individually owned, so two on the same lane can be nothing alike.

The names worth knowing, plus one that catches people out:

Pick the village before the property, since that shapes the trip more than the room does. Yucun is the main hub, with the market square and the scenic-area gateway. Xiantan holds about 135 guesthouses in a village of under 2,000 people. Laoling has the reservoir and the cycling, and Houwu and Dazaowu are the quiet ones. Where to stay sorts them out.

Step 5: what to book before you go

Dinner is the booking people forget. Chinese reporting is blunt about the missing evening economy: no night market, very little late-night food. If your guesthouse is not cooking, your options after 20:00 are thin. Reserve a table for every night when you book the room, and ask in the same message whether they can register a foreign passport.

Train tickets can wait, though not until the last morning of a holiday weekend. Scenic-area tickets need no advance booking, but published prices conflict badly, so tickets and entry sets out both ranges rather than picking one.

Step 6: money and payments

Bind a foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly. Both have taken overseas cards since 2023, and inbound tourists spent about RMB 80 billion that way in 2025.

That last row is the one to act on. Asking a host you have never met whether they can register your passport is awkward. Ask anyway. Money and payments covers the setup.

Step 7: friction, and what it costs

Everything above is bookable from a laptop. This part is not. The rule almost nobody publishes in English is that you cannot drive into the scenic area at all.

Plan the day inside that window. An evening arrival at Deqing will not get you up the hill.

Count your transfers honestly. Even a smooth run from Shanghai means a train, then a 30 to 40 minute road leg before you reach a transfer center. Two swaps after the train is why a Shanghai day trip disappoints.

Next to the room, getting here is close to free: the fares above are two figures, the bed three or four. Scenic-area tickets we cannot price, because the published figures conflict.

The mountain is also quiet after dark by design. Two slow days is what it is for, and is Moganshan worth visiting argues that out.
