Most visitors treat Yucun as somewhere to pass through on the way to something they have paid for. They have it backwards. Yucun sits at the foot of Moganshan, below the scenic area gate. Its old silkworm farm, a Republic era library, a gallery and a new riverside street carry no admission price in any source we can reach.
Moganshan (莫干山) is a bamboo mountain and former hill station in Deqing County (德清县), Huzhou (湖州), Zhejiang, about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. It is not Moganshan Road in Shanghai, the M50 art district in Putuo. Nor is this Yucun (庾村) the Yucun in Anji County, written 余村, a different village that the UN World Tourism Organization named a Best Tourism Village in 2021. Search results mix the two up constantly.

Yucun, Moganshan: a town, not a village
Yucun is the market town where the road up the mountain begins. The administrative village, the unit a Chinese postal address uses, is Liaoyuan (燎原村), and that is the name a booking confirmation will usually print. Of the 809 Moganshan listings we hold, 73 give a Liaoyuan address and 24 give Huangfu East or West Road (黄郛东路, 黄郛西路), the town’s main streets.

The headline says village because that is what English listings and searches call it.
The town is also a 4A rated scenic area in its own right. That is the second highest grade on China’s A to 5A scale for tourist sites, and it sounds like a gate. The only official document we can find that pairs Yucun with a ticket is a June 2023 Huzhou roll of scenic areas waiving “the first gate ticket” for exam candidates. The roll prints no price.

The ticket that matters is the scenic area’s, up the hill. Yucun is where people leave their cars for it. It’s one of three transfer centres (换乘中心), with Fatou and Houwu, and the coach up leaves from here.

What costs nothing in Yucun
Most of the old town comes out of one man’s project. Huang Fu (黄郛), who had run the Republican government’s foreign affairs and served as mayor of Shanghai, retired to Moganshan in 1931 and set about remaking the village below it: trees, water storage, a school, a library, a livestock farm and a silkworm egg farm. He died in 1936. His widow, Shen Yiyun (沈亦云), kept the work going until 1949, and he is buried in Yucun.

Start with the park. The designer Zhu Shengxuan (朱胜萱) leased the ground in 2011, kept the farm’s layout, repaired its eleven buildings and opened the first phase in October 2013. The architect Zhuang Shen (庄慎) strung bamboo awnings between the yards on a budget of RMB 100,000, and the paths were laid with pebbles from the stream bed.

The White Cloud art museum occupies part of the same buildings. It opened in 2017 with a public gallery on the ground floor and five loft rooms upstairs that you can book.

The library is what has changed most. A hall built in 1932 opened as a branch of the county library in 2016, with more than 600 Republic era periodical titles running to 20,000 issues.

In June 2026 the county library said a poetry bookshop, Paofuyun (泡芙云), had taken over running it. It added a bookshop, a small exhibition room, a crafts corner and a counter for coffee and tea, and kept the Republic collection.

The last published hours are 09:00 to 16:30, closed on Mondays. They date from January 2023. The library’s notice for the 2026 Mid Autumn holiday lists its main building and three city reading rooms and does not mention the Moganshan branch at all, so treat the old hours as a guide rather than a promise.

The old bus station stands where Huangfu East Road meets Huangfu Road, on a stretch rebuilt as a Republic style street with a photo studio, a cloth shoe shop and cafés, next to the town square. In 1916, the same report notes, Shanghai to Moganshan took 14 hours by train and steamboat.

Mogan Yujie is the newest part: RMB 1.17 billion of rebuilt factories and public space along the Fuxi (阜溪). Phase one opened on 1 May 2024 and phase two on 1 October 2025. Its Moganshan Art Museum, in a 1980s metalwork factory, opened on 28 September 2024 at No. 150.

Eating in Yucun: dishes, not addresses
That’s the free half of the town. Lunch is where you start paying.
The two accounts below name dishes, not restaurants. Before the street was rebuilt, a 2018 account named pig liver noodles, sesame cakes and cloth shoes as the town’s three treasures. A 2020 one sent visitors to bamboo shoots braised with pork and to wild greens.

Neither names a restaurant we could confirm is still trading, so we haven’t repeated either as an address. On a weekday out of season, ask your host what is open that evening before you walk down.

What has changed is the supply. Phase two of Yujie added a waterside shopping street, a market and a canteen for the young people working there, and the street counted more than 60 brands by November 2025. For dinner, that means a walk rather than a message to your host.

Staying in Yucun
Choose by the address. The name can mislead: twenty listings put “Yucun Square”, “Yucun Plaza” or a variant in their names. Here is where those twenty say they are:

A walk through Yucun
The Fuxi rises at Sword Pond on the mountain and runs down through the Moganwu valley into Yucun, so walking up Yujie is walking towards the summit.

This is a desk route: nobody on this desk has walked it. Start at the old bus station on Huangfu East Road, with the square beside it. Cross to the 1932 park, which the sources place near the square, and look into the White Cloud gallery inside it. Then take the stream path up Yujie, 1.6 km to its far end, past the art museum.
Budget a morning.
Sword Pond, where the stream starts, is a proper hike from here. Hiking on Moganshan sets it out.
Who should base here
Anyone without a car. The transfer centre is in the town, the coach up leaves from it, and the timetable has been printed as a first coach up at 08:00 and a last coach down at 17:00. The fare last printed, in 2023, was RMB 35 return. After that you’re wherever you’re sleeping, and in Yucun that means a street with food on it.

A first visit of one or two nights is the other obvious case. The shuttle system has the coach times and fares, and the ticket piece explains why nobody agrees on what the gate charges.
And if the question is whether Moganshan without a ticket is worth the trip, start here. You can spend a full day in Yucun without going near the gate.
The honest downside
Yucun is a town, and since 2024 a busy one. Over the 2025 National Day and Mid Autumn holiday, Mogan Yujie counted 250,000 visits, up 280 percent on the year before. Zhejiang Online printed that figure without naming its source, and it is not a statistics bureau count, so read it as a local tally. Either way, this is not a quiet village over a holiday.

It can be loud. The street’s operator told Tide News that event music drew complaints from older residents at first.

Building work has not finished either. A youth hostel of about 2,000 m² on Yujie was under construction in November 2025, due to open in 2026.

None of that describes an ordinary weekday: the 280 percent is a holiday count, and we found none for a Tuesday in March. If the reason you came to Moganshan is bamboo and silence, sleep in one of the villages further out and come down to Yucun for dinner. The villages below Moganshan sets out what each one offers.
