Cookies

One thing on this site counts you: Google Analytics, and only if you are reading from outside mainland China. Nothing else is set, and this page accounts for all of it.

The short version

Visit Moganshan runs Google Analytics, and nothing else. It counts pages read, roughly where in the world the reader was, and how they arrived. It does not know your name, it is not connected to any advertising we buy, because we buy none, and it is switched off entirely for readers inside mainland China. There are no advertising trackers, no remarketing pixels, no social widgets and no embedded players anywhere on this site.

The one thing we measure

Google Analytics 4, property G-RRDR1EJK35. It answers questions we cannot answer any other way: which of these guides are actually read to the end, which are opened on a phone halfway up the hill, which pages people leave immediately because they did not find what the search result promised. That is what decides which pages get rewritten next.

To do it, Google Analytics sets two cookies on your device, named _ga and _ga_RRDR1EJK35. They hold a randomly generated number that lets the same browser be recognised on a second visit, so two visits from you are not counted as two people. They expire two years after your last visit. They carry no name, no email address and nothing you typed.

Your IP address reaches Google as part of the request, is used to place you at roughly city level, and is not retained by Google Analytics or made available to us. What we see is aggregate: counts, countries, referrers, devices. We do not use Google Signals, we run no advertising or remarketing features on the property, and nothing measured here is used to build an advertising audience.

Google Analytics is operated by Google, which means this data is processed outside Hong Kong, including in the United States. Google's own handling of it is covered by theGoogle privacy policy, over which we have no control.

Reading from inside China

If you are reading this from mainland China, none of the above is happening to you. The analytics script is requested from our own domain, and our server decides per request whether to answer with the real thing or with an empty file. Requests we place inside mainland China get the empty file: no cookie is set, and no request to Google is made from your browser at all.

This is as much a performance decision as a privacy one. Google's servers are not reachable from behind the Great Firewall, so a page that asks for them anyway spends its time waiting on a script that will never arrive, and the reader who pays for that is usually the one on a phone and a weak signal on the mountain itself. If we cannot tell where a request came from, it is treated as being inside China and the measurement does not run.

A small text file a site asks your browser to store and send back on your next visit. Cookies are what let a site remember you are logged in, what is in your basket, or which language you chose. They are also what lets an advertising network recognise the same browser across thousands of unrelated sites. The technology is neutral. The use it is put to is not, and it is the second use that earned the reputation.

What we do not set

Everything below is absent from this site today, and if any of it ever ships, this page changes in the same release.

  • Marketing and remarketing. Advertising trackers, conversion pixels, audience builders. None, and we have no plans for any. If that ever changed they would require your explicit opt in, off by default, through a real control rather than a banner engineered to be accepted.
  • Social. No like buttons, share widgets or platform pixels. The share links on this site are ordinary links that do nothing until you click them.
  • Functional. We store no preference of yours, because the site asks you for none: no language switcher, no units toggle, no theme. Anything of that kind would be set only at the moment you chose it.
  • Strictly necessary. Nothing beyond the contact form's own submission, which keeps no cookie afterwards. There is no login and no basket to hold open.

Other browser storage

Cookies are not the only way to keep something on your device, and a policy that only mentions cookies is dodging the question. We use no local storage, no session storage, no IndexedDB, no service workers and no fingerprinting techniques of any kind. The two analytics cookies named above are the whole of what this site puts on your machine.

The one thing your browser does keep is its ordinary cache: copies of pages, images and fonts, so a second visit loads faster. That is standard web behaviour, it holds nothing about you, and your browser clears it whenever you ask it to.

Third party content

Apart from the analytics script, we embed nothing from anybody else. No hosted maps, no video players, no social widgets, no font or script services, no comment platforms. Every font, image and style sheet on this site is served from our own domain. Each embed we have declined is a request to another company's server carrying your IP address, and each is also a component that can fail to load in mainland China and take part of the page down with it. We link out to those services instead, so you decide whether to visit them.

Once you follow a link off this site, that company's cookie practices apply and ours stop being relevant.

Server logs

Delivering a page to you still produces a log entry at our host, which can include your IP address, the page requested and your browser type. That is how the web works and it happens without any cookie. What those logs contain, how long they are kept and what we use them for is covered in the privacy policy.

Your browser, and how to opt out

Your browser is the final authority over storage, whatever any site claims. Every major browser lets you view what has been stored, delete it, and block cookies by site or across the board, usually under settings for privacy, content or site data. Blocking cookies entirely will break a great many sites. It will not break this one: nothing here depends on the analytics cookies, and the guide works identically without them.

If you would rather not be counted, any of these is enough, and none of them costs you anything on this site. Block cookies for visitmoganshan.com in your browser settings. Install Google's ownAnalytics opt out add on, which switches the measurement off across every site that uses it. Or use any content blocker, or a browser such as Safari, Firefox or Brave that blocks this class of script by default.

We follow Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, and we apply the standards of the ePrivacy rules and the UK and EU GDPR for readers in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area. Those rules treat measurement cookies as non essential and expect a genuine choice about them rather than a banner built to be clicked through. What we do in place of a banner is keep the footprint small enough to state in full on one page: two cookies, one purpose, no advertising use, no profile, and the opt outs above that we honour without asking you for anything.
