Is there a direct train from Shanghai to Moganshan?
No. There is no station on the mountain. Book Shanghai Hongqiao to Deqing, 13 services a day, then finish the trip by shuttle or taxi.
Which station do I book?
Deqing. Do not book the station named Moganshan: it sits on a different line and serves Wukang and the county town, not the mountain. Huzhou is farther away again.
How long does it take from Shanghai?
From central Shanghai by rail, 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes door to door. By car, 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. From Pudong airport, 4 hours to 4 hours 45 minutes. The train leg itself is 63 to 80 minutes.
How long is the train from Hangzhou?
Hangzhou East to Deqing is 13 to 17 minutes, with 16 services a day. Add the transfer and total travel time is closer to two hours.
What does it cost?
Roughly RMB 61 to 110 for a second class seat from Shanghai Hongqiao, plus RMB 10 for the Y1 shuttle or about RMB 100 for a taxi from Deqing.
Is Hangzhou easier than Shanghai for this?
Considerably. If your itinerary allows a Hangzhou night before Moganshan, the transfer stops being a project. It is not worth a detour from Shanghai on its own.
Is Moganshan the same as Moganshan Road in Shanghai?
No. Moganshan Road is the M50 art district in Putuo District, Shanghai. The mountain is in Deqing County, Zhejiang, about 200 km away.
Arriving, and the last 30 km

How far is Deqing station from Moganshan?
About 30 to 40 minutes by shuttle, about 30 minutes by taxi. The Y1 costs RMB 10 and a taxi costs about RMB 100.
What is the last realistic time to arrive?
The Y1 shuttle’s final return leaves at 17:00, and the scenic-area transfer centers close at 18:00. If your train reaches Deqing after about 17:00, arrange a car in advance and confirm with your guesthouse.
I arrived late and the shuttle has finished. What now?
Take a taxi to Moganshan town, about RMB 100 and about 30 minutes. If your bed is inside the scenic area and the transfer centers have closed for the day, message your guesthouse and be ready to spend the night in Wukang, the county seat about 20 km away, and go up in the morning. Nothing about this is unusual, and no one will be surprised by your call.
Can I drive or take a taxi right up to my guesthouse?
Only outside the scenic area. Private vehicles do not enter the core, and a taxi is a private vehicle. It leaves you at Yucun, Fatou or Houwu, which run 08:00 to 18:00, and you change to scenic-area transport there. Properties outside the boundary are a different matter, so ask them directly.
What happens to my luggage at the transfer center?
It moves with you. You take your bags off the vehicle that brought you and onto scenic-area transport. There is no left-luggage arrangement we can confirm, so plan to carry everything.

Do I need a car once I am there?
Not inside the scenic area, where private vehicles are barred anyway. Between villages a car or a booked driver helps, since the villages are spread out and Houwu is about 30 minutes from Yucun.
Is there a bus between the villages?
Not one we can confirm for visitors. The Y1 shuttle connects Deqing station with Moganshan town and terminates there. For village-to-village movement, assume a car or a guesthouse pickup.
Tickets
How much is the scenic-area ticket?
Sources disagree. One set of figures gives RMB 120 online and RMB 130 at the gate. Another gives RMB 50 off-season and RMB 80 in peak season. Winter tickets are half price. Check the current price when you book rather than trusting any published number, including this one.
How long to stay, and the day-trip question

Is Moganshan a good day trip from Shanghai?
It is workable but tight. You will spend 5 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours travelling and get about four to five hours on the mountain. From Pudong it is not worth attempting.
Can I visit as a day trip from Hangzhou?
You can, and it is far less tight. The last Y1 shuttle back to Deqing leaves around 17:00, which gives you roughly six hours on the mountain if you catch an early departure. With a car you get more room. A night is still better than a long day.
What is the earliest I can be on the mountain?
Realistically about 10:15 to 10:40, taking an early train from Hongqiao and the 09:40 Y1 shuttle. The transfer centers open at 08:00, but no Shanghai traveler arrives that early.
What time do I have to start heading back?
Aim to be moving down by 15:45. The last Y1 return leaves at 17:00 and the transfer centers close at 18:00. After that you are paying about RMB 100 for a taxi to Deqing.
Is one night enough instead of two?
One night helps a lot because it buys you a morning. Two nights buys two mornings and takes the pressure off both travel days.
Where to stay

Is a minsu the same as an Airbnb?
Not quite. An Airbnb is a listing. A minsu is a category of small licensed guesthouse, normally with an owner or manager living on site, and here it is the dominant form of accommodation rather than an alternative to one.
Can a foreign passport holder book directly?
Yes, and the May 2024 directive says a property cannot refuse you for lack of a licence. Refusals still happen, so confirm in writing before you pay.
Is RMB 300 a night really enough?
Off season and midweek, yes. That band is the normal mid-range rate. On a summer weekend or a Golden Week, expect the same room to ask RMB 1,000 or more. High-end occupancy hit 94 percent over the May 2024 holiday.
Will anyone speak English?
At the foreign-founded and high-end properties, likely. At a village family house, assume not, and plan around a translation app.
Do I need to book dinner in advance?
On your arrival night, yes. The villages have almost no evening food, and turning up hungry at eight is how people end up eating instant noodles.

Is Moganshan worth visiting for one night?
From Hangzhou, yes. One night buys you a morning in the bamboo, the best hour of the day. From Shanghai, two nights makes more sense.
Is Moganshan too touristy?
It depends on when you go. Weekends and the two Golden Weeks are crowded, with high-end occupancy at 94 percent during the May 2024 holiday. Mondays are quiet. Check the seasons page before fixing dates.
Should I visit Moganshan instead of Hangzhou?
No. Visit it as well as Hangzhou. They do different jobs, and they are 13 to 17 minutes apart by train.
Is Moganshan worth it in winter?
For some people. January averages 1.4 °C, but tickets are half price and the mountain is empty. The summer argument does not apply.
What will disappoint me most?
The evenings. Everything else here is manageable with planning. The lack of food and activity after dark is structural, and planning does not fix it.
