A search for Moganshan hotels returns hundreds of results and almost none of them are hotels. The mountain has about twelve properties that operate as one, with a front desk and a duty roster, against roughly a thousand minsu, the small owner-run guesthouses that make up most of the beds here. The 92 places on this page are the ones Trip.com calls a hotel or a 酒店, and that description is the owner’s, not ours: a family house with eight rooms can file itself as a hotel, and many do.
The distinction that matters is on or off the mountain. The conventional hotels with hundreds of rooms are mostly in Wukang, the Deqing county seat, about 20 km from the villages. The Crowne Plaza Deqing Moganshan, about 340 rooms, is there. Wukang is where the high-speed rail arrives and where the services are, and it is the right answer for a late train or for anyone who wants a normal hotel night before going up in the morning. It is the wrong answer if the point of the trip was the bamboo, because you will drive to it every day.
Up in the villages, expect the guesthouse economy whatever the name on the sign. Rates move with the calendar: RMB 300 to 500 a night for a mid-range room off season and midweek, past RMB 1,000 on a summer Saturday or a Golden Week, and RMB 1,500 upward at what the local trade calls high end. The dollar on each card is the cheapest rate Trip.com showed on the day of capture, with the yuan beside it. Dinner is not a given in the smaller villages, so ask, and check that your arrival clears the 18:00 close of the transfer centers, since private cars cannot enter the scenic area.
One rule now applies to every property here. A joint directive of 24 May 2024 bars hotels from refusing foreign guests for lack of a licence, and it is national. Refusals are still reported in practice, so a one-line message before paying, saying you hold a foreign passport and asking them to confirm they can register you, is still worth sending. Every hotel in Moganshan names the twelve real ones with what the record confirms, and what a minsu is explains the rest.

I was here for a trail race, and getting a room in this position was a real stroke of luck. The room is open front to back and has a small balcony, and sitting out on it with the view is a pleasure. The doors and the furniture are all timber, which fits the setting. They put out a lot of snacks on the ground floor, and there is a lovely shiba inu to make a fuss of. The owners are excellent. I did not know when I would be back from the race, so I asked about a late checkout and was told two o'clock if nobody had booked the room. It was so hot that I did not get back until 2.47, and I was ready to pay for the extra time since I wanted a shower, and she would not take the money. I would not recommend it. The cleaning is poor. The quilt smells of mould and damp, there are clumps of hair in the bathroom that nobody has cleared, the toilet is not clean, and the balcony is thick with dust and grit. Sitting briefly in the rattan chair tore two holes in my trousers, and thankfully I had a spare pair in the car or the rest of the trip would have been awkward. The door still uses a key and it is stiff, which tells you how much effort is going in. On the good side it is close to Sword Pond and fairly central, though there are steps up and down, which is hard work, and it is quiet at night. On the whole it does not justify the price, particularly over five hundred at the National Day holiday.

A wonderful stay. I liked the look of it online and it turned out better than that. The young couple running it went well beyond what you would expect, the rooms and the setting are good, and I was happy with all of it. A few days somewhere like this in the rain is close to paradise. They gave us a very thoughtful parting gift, and the area around is lovely and quiet.

I booked the wrong thing and they would not refund it, so I drove an extra fifty kilometres to stay here. The position halfway up the hill is not good and there is nothing much around it worth seeing. It is expensive for what it is, and breakfast in particular was thin, few dishes and few of each. The first time I have reviewed anywhere I have stayed. I have used plenty of hotels and guesthouses and I have never seen a room in this state. The water from the tap runs yellow. There are marks on the toilet seat. The floor is filthy. The bathroom door wobbles and there is nothing separating the wet area from the dry. There is a smell as you walk in. The sockets are damaged and there are pitifully few of them. The remote control is dirty and the air conditioning is loud. The owner is a decent man though, obliging and willing. All of the above is simply what I found, and I could not keep quiet about it.
