Deqing station, and the station that is not Moganshan

Moganshan is a mountain in Deqing County, in Huzhou prefecture, Zhejiang Province. It sits about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. Getting there by rail is genuinely easy, on one condition: you have to book the right station.

There is a high-speed stop on the national network called Moganshan. It does not serve the mountain. The station you want is Deqing.

That is the single most useful sentence on this page.

The Moganshan train station trap

Moganshan railway station is real. It has a real timetable and real trains. It sits on the Shangqiu to Hefei to Hangzhou line, and it serves the Deqing and Wukang side of the county rather than the mountain itself.

Deqing railway station is the one that works. It is on the Nanjing to Hangzhou high-speed line, which has been open since 2013, and the shuttle bus to Moganshan leaves from the coach center next door.

Book the wrong one and nothing dramatic happens. You just land in an unfamiliar part of a county you did not plan to visit, probably at an hour when the shuttle has stopped for the day.

A couple of other names cause the same kind of trouble, mostly in search results.

Which trains stop at Deqing

From Shanghai Hongqiao there are 13 direct services a day. The ride takes 63 to 80 minutes. A second class seat costs roughly RMB 61 to 110.

From Hangzhou East it is barely a journey at all. The distance is 35 km, the fastest run is 13 minutes, and there are 16 services a day at roughly RMB 16 to 67. Look at that last example. The 17:39 arrives at 18:42. Hold that thought.

On arrival: the coach center

Deqing Coach Center sits next to the station. The Y1 tourist shuttle to Moganshan starts there, and for most travelers it is the only thing at the station they need to find.

If you cannot spot the Y1 bay, show a staff member the mountain’s Chinese name, 莫干山, on your phone. It works faster than trying to say it.

The Y1 shuttle: real times, real fare

The Y1 runs from Deqing Coach Center to the Moganshan tourist distribution center. It is dressed up to look like a Republican-era tram, which is charming and irrelevant to whether you make it. The ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes and costs RMB 10.

There are seven departures a day. Seven is the whole service, not a sample.

Two gaps in that table matter. Nothing runs between 10:40 and 13:00, so a late-morning arrival can mean a long wait with your luggage. And nothing runs after 16:00 at all.

One more thing about the Y1, and it surprises people. It terminates in Moganshan town. It does not carry you into the scenic area, and it does not stop at your guesthouse door.

Taxi, when the shuttle has gone

A taxi or van from the station to Moganshan town costs about RMB 100 and takes about 30 minutes.

That is ten times the shuttle fare for the same trip. On a wet evening it is money well spent, and there is no prize for avoiding it.

The rule about driving inside the scenic area

Private vehicles cannot drive inside the Moganshan scenic area. Everyone changes to local transport at one of three transfer centers: Yucun, Fatou or Houwu. They operate from 08:00 to 18:00.

This catches taxi passengers more than shuttle passengers, because a taxi feels like a door-to-door solution and then suddenly is not. Ask your guesthouse, before you travel, which transfer center serves them. Some sit outside the restricted area and the question never comes up.

If you arrive after the last shuttle

Take the 17:39 from Hongqiao and you reach Deqing at 18:42. The last Y1 left at 16:00. The transfer centers shut at 18:00. You are not stranded, but you are now solving a problem instead of starting a trip.

Wukang is the Deqing county seat and the county’s service town, which is why the Crowne Plaza Deqing Moganshan sits there rather than on the mountain. That is geography, not a recommendation. Where to stay sets out the options across the whole area.

One more warning. Chinese reporting notes the Moganshan villages have no real evening economy: no night market, very little late-night food. Arriving at 20:00 hungry is a real risk. Eat at the station or in Wukang.
