The mountain itself

Where is Moganshan, exactly?
Deqing County, Huzhou prefecture, Zhejiang Province, about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. It is not the Moganshan Road art district in Shanghai.
How do I get there?
Train to Deqing station, then 30 to 40 minutes by road. Do not book the station called Moganshan, which serves a different town.
How long should I stay?
Two nights is the useful minimum from Shanghai, since the trip runs close to three hours each way. One night works from Hangzhou. Three suits walkers, and the things to do page will tell you whether that is too many.
Is it worth it?
It depends on what you want. For quiet, cool air and good rooms in the countryside, yes. For sightseeing, food scene or anything after 21:00, no. The longer answer, by traveler type, is on is Moganshan worth visiting.

Who actually founded Moganshan?
American Protestant missionaries, in the 1890s. E. N. Fletcher identified the site sometime between 1891 and 1894. Who built the first villa is disputed between George A. Hudson in 1898, an American named W. W. White, and an English merchant in 1896.
Was Moganshan really a foreign town?
For a season each year, close to it. By 1910 about 300 foreigners held summer homes here, and their own association ran land, building and roads from 1898. Chinese administrative control returned in 1928.
How many of the old villas are still standing?
About 250, with some sources saying 200 or more. Around 154 Western-style villas stood in the 1920s, and Chinese owners added more than 300 between 1928 and 1949.
Did Mao Zedong write the first Chinese constitution here?
He stayed on the mountain in 1954, the year the first constitution was adopted, in a villa built in 1934. The drafting is documented as having happened in Hangzhou. Local storytelling links the two; the sources do not, so neither do we.
Why did foreigners come back after 2003?
Mark Kitto took a lease and opened Moganshan Lodge that year. Grant Horsfield followed in 2007 with the first foreign-run farmstay. Investors from 18 countries now hold guesthouses on and around the mountain.
Why does anyone call this the Hamptons of China?
Tatler Asia used the phrase and it stuck. It describes the pattern, a cool retreat within reach of a hot rich city, not the look of the place.
Can I go inside the villas?
Mostly no. Many are private residences, offices or simply shut. Several operate as hotels, and those you can book. The walk past them is a looking exercise: stay on public roads, do not open gates, do not photograph through windows.
How long does the villa walking tour take?
Half a day at a slow pace, over roughly four kilometres of lane and steps. It is a looking walk rather than a timed circuit, so the pace is yours. The walking tour has the six stops in order.

Is the Moganshan bamboo forest free to enter?
The core scenic area charges. Prices vary between sources and change with the season, with half price in winter, so check when you book rather than trusting a figure you read online. Bamboo outside the core area, around the guesthouse villages, is simply there.
When is the best time to visit the bamboo forest?
April and October if you want light and comfort. July and August if you want the cool air, which is why the mountain became a resort in the first place. Aim for a Monday.
Can I see bamboo without hiking?
Yes. Roads and village lanes run through it, and several guesthouses look straight into it. You do not need to be fit to see this forest.
Is the bamboo forest worth the trip from Shanghai?
As a day trip, it is tight, at close to three hours each way. As part of two nights on the mountain, yes.
Weather, and when to go

What is the best time to visit Moganshan?
Late April to May, or late September to October. Mild weather, manageable crowds. Skip the first week of May and the first week of October, when the Golden Week holidays land.
How much cooler is Moganshan than Shanghai?
About 6 to 7 °C in summer, with a July and August mean of 24.1 °C. One source puts the gap nearer 5 °C, so treat 6 to 7 as a working figure and not a guarantee.
Is Moganshan cold in winter?
Yes. January averages 1.4 °C, close to freezing. Some sources say nearer 3.5 °C. You need a proper coat either way. The reward is half-price tickets and empty paths.
Can I trust a Moganshan weather forecast?
Partly. Most apps report Deqing or Wukang, down in the valley about 20 km away. Subtract 6 to 7 degrees in summer, and assume cooler on the ridge the rest of the year.
When is it most crowded?
The May Day and National Day holidays, then summer weekends. Monday is the quietest day.
