Shanghai to Moganshan by high-speed train

Moganshan is a mountain in Deqing County, part of Huzhou prefecture, in Zhejiang Province. It stands about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. Moso bamboo covers more than 92 percent of it, and the bamboo is a working crop, not scenery someone planted.

Check that you have the right place before you book anything. Moganshan Road in Shanghai’s Putuo District is the M50 art district, about 200 km from the mountain, and it crowds the search results. There is also a railway station called Moganshan. It does not serve the mountain either.

The train is the fastest way in from Shanghai. It is also where travelers make their one avoidable mistake.

Get off at Deqing, not at Moganshan

Deqing station is your stop. It sits on the Nanjing to Hangzhou high-speed line, which has been running since 2013, and it is the closest high-speed station to the mountain.

Moganshan station is a different place on a different line, the Shangqiu to Hefei to Hangzhou route. It serves Wukang, the Deqing county seat about 20 km away, which is where the county’s offices, hospitals and big supermarkets are. Useful town. Wrong station.

Huzhou station is a third option people find, and it is farther from Moganshan than Deqing is. Booking it costs you time on the road at the other end.

What the 2024 line changed, and what it did not

On 26 December 2024 the Shanghai to Suzhou to Huzhou high-speed line opened. At its fastest it puts Hongqiao within 55 minutes of Huzhou. That was a genuine improvement to the northern approach into this part of Zhejiang, and it is the reason a lot of older travel advice now reads as pessimistic.

It did not change Deqing. Deqing has been on the Nanjing to Hangzhou line since 2013, and the Hangzhou side of the journey never depended on the new track. If you are coming from Hangzhou East, you are riding infrastructure that is more than a decade old and works fine: 13 to 17 minutes over 35 km, 16 services a day, fares roughly RMB 16 to 67.

So a faster train to Huzhou does not make a faster trip to Moganshan. Deqing is still the stop.

Example direct services from Shanghai Hongqiao

There are 13 direct services a day from Shanghai Hongqiao to Deqing. Journey time runs from 63 to 80 minutes. A second class seat costs roughly RMB 61 to 110 depending on the train.

Times and train numbers change with each timetable revision, usually more than once a year. Treat the table as a sample of what the day looks like, not as a schedule to plan around, and check the live times when you book.

How to book, step by step

1. Fix your date, then look at the whole day

Thirteen services is enough choice to be useful and not enough to be casual about. Weekends and the Golden Week holidays in early May and early October load the whole corridor. Book those well ahead.

Pull up the live Shanghai Hongqiao to Deqing timetable and read the whole day before you pick anything, because the train that suits you and the train that drops you into the shuttle gap can be forty minutes apart.

2. Set the destination to Deqing

Type Deqing. Not Moganshan, not Huzhou. If your booking app offers you a station called Moganshan, that is the trap described above.

3. Book on the passport you will travel on

Chinese rail tickets are tied to the identity document used to buy them, so the name and number must match your passport exactly. One letter out and the gate will not accept you. If you have two passports, use the one you will be carrying that day.

Foreign passports are scanned at a staffed lane rather than the automatic gates, so allow a few extra minutes and follow the staff instructions on the day.

4. Pick your class

Second class is the normal choice on this route and costs roughly RMB 61 to 110. The trip is around an hour. First class buys you a wider seat and not much else on a journey this short.

5. Match your arrival to the last mile

This is the step most people skip. The onward shuttle from Deqing runs seven times a day, and the gaps are real. Read the shuttle table below before you commit to a train.

6. Send your train number ahead

Tell your guesthouse your train number and arrival time. Many properties in the villages will arrange a pickup or point you to the right driver, and some sit well off the shuttle route. See where to stay for how the villages differ.

Reading your ticket

Check four things before you leave the ticket hall or close the app.

• The departure station reads Shanghai Hongqiao. Shanghai has several long-distance stations and they are far apart.
• The date is the date you meant. Chinese tickets are sold for a specific train on a specific day.
• The train number matches the one on the departure board.
• Your car number and seat. The car number tells you where to stand on the platform, and the platform markings line up with it.

At Deqing station: the last 30 km

Deqing station is not the mountain. You still have about 30 minutes of road ahead of you.

The Y1 tourist shuttle, styled as a Republican-era tram, leaves from the Deqing Coach Centre next to the station and runs to the Moganshan tourist distribution centre. It takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs RMB 10.

Two things about that timetable. There is no shuttle between 10:40 and 13:00, which catches out anyone on a late-morning train. And the Y1 terminates in Moganshan town. It does not carry you into the scenic area itself.

A taxi or van from the station costs about RMB 100 and takes about 30 minutes to the town. For two or more people arriving in the midday gap, that is the sensible call.

The rule almost nobody publishes in English

Private vehicles cannot drive inside the scenic area. Visitors change to authorized transport at one of three transfer centres, at Yucun, Fatou and Houwu, which operate from 08:00 to 18:00.

This affects you even if you took the train the whole way, because your taxi from Deqing stops at the same boundary everyone else does. Plan to arrive at a transfer centre before 18:00. Our page on getting around Moganshan covers what runs beyond that point.

Realistic door to door

These are estimates, not timetabled figures. They assume you are not sprinting.

Pudong is the honest problem here. You have to cross Shanghai to Hongqiao first, by maglev and metro or by car in 50 to 70 minutes, before the rail journey even starts.
