What actually closes in winter on Moganshan

Winter brings temporary closures, not a verified annual shutdown. Check the scenic area, individual sights and your accommodation separately before committing to a mountain trip.

Is Moganshan open in winter? It has welcomed winter visitors, but snow can interrupt access. Dated reports of Moganshan winter visits show partial reopening, with some sights still shut. This guide explains those examples; it is not a list of closures in force today.

Moganshan (莫干山) is in Deqing County (德清县), Huzhou (湖州), Zhejiang (浙江), China. Booking a hotel with “Moganshan” in its name does not settle access to the mountain or the surrounding villages. This is not Moganshan Road in Shanghai, home to the M50 art district. Start with the seasons guide if you are still choosing when to travel.

Moganshan winter: what can close

This is a desk researched guide to the published record, not a live status board. We have not walked the routes or called the operators.

Part of the trip Evidence detailed and sourced below What to establish for your dates
Main scenic area A temporary snow closure, followed by reopening Whether admission is operating
Individual sights Some remained shut when the wider area reopened Whether your intended walk is included
Village businesses Winter trading is documented, not universal opening Your chosen venue’s actual hours
Accommodation facilities No verified winter closure inventory Which facilities your booking includes

We could read local reporting but could not retrieve the county notices page or the scenic area’s own website. The examples below retain their original dates.

If a waterfall is the reason you’re coming, ask about it before buying the rest of the trip. A room confirmation answers only the accommodation question. It doesn’t confirm an attraction or the route between them.

What the January closure notice said

On the evening of 30 January 2026, road icing closed the Moganshan scenic area. Tide News reported that the management centre then announced reopening from 1 February after clearing snow and inspecting the roads. Sword Pond (剑池) and Dakeng (大坑) were among the sights excluded from that reopening.

Closure on 30 January and reopening from 1 February with some sights excluded, Tide News (潮新闻), 31 January 2026, tier 2. https://tidenews.com.cn/news.html?id=3360833

The report gives no annual closing date or later reopening date for the excluded sights. It records one weather interruption. Those January restrictions cannot be used as their status today.

Read past the headline. A reopening notice needs an effective date; look for excluded sights further down the text. Save it with its publication date visible. An undated screenshot passed between travellers is hard to distinguish from last winter’s news.

For a visit built around Sword Pond, ask about the walking access itself. Being admitted to the wider scenic area would not, by itself, settle that question. Do not substitute a nearby path for a closed route without checking where it leads and whether access is allowed.

The villages had winter visitors

In a report published on 24 February, Deqing News described visitors at the Moganshan tourist transfer centre before 09:00 on the third day of Spring Festival in 2026. The same report described New Year activities on Mogan Yujie (莫干庾街), a commercial street in the wider Moganshan tourist area.

The holiday report is not an opening guarantee for a café on an ordinary weekday, and it supplies no timetable for the next holiday. Do not use “low season” as a substitute for checking the specific dates you want.

For a village visit, start with the business you would be disappointed to miss. Establish its opening arrangements, then find somewhere nearby for a meal. If you have a driver collecting you later, agree what to do if you arrive to find the venue closed. Don’t leave that conversation until the car has gone.

Ask about the pool and the heating

We could not verify a current list of properties that close for winter, or a common closing date for their outdoor facilities. We therefore name none as closed. Treat a pool photograph as a description of the property, not a dated offer to swim during your stay.

An unavailable room on a booking site is not evidence of a seasonal closure. Ask the property what the unavailable dates mean.

At Xixin camp (喜心营地), in Xiantan village (仙潭村), an operator interviewed by China News Service described replacing tents with cabins because of insulation problems, including winter cold. He also described visitors coming after New Year snow in 2026. That is an operator’s account of that season, not our inspection of its rooms or an offer for the coming winter.

When comparing accommodation, establish what heats the room and whether “heating” also covers the bathroom and dining space. Request that staff switch it on before you arrive. Which stays are actually warm reads the heating on the listings. Name any bathing facility you want to use; its availability needs a separate answer for your dates.

Before paying, establish Why the answer changes the booking
The room’s heating and any separate bathroom heating A warm communal lounge does not describe the bedroom
Dinner service on your arrival evening Breakfast included says nothing about dinner
Pool or bathing facility availability A room can be sold without every leisure facility
Transport to the property if access changes The hotel address alone does not settle the final approach
The booking’s cancellation conditions Check room and attraction reservations separately

Ask for written answers in the booking conversation (including the room type). Give your arrival date and name the facility you mean. If you get only a brochure back, request a specific answer. Without a clear answer, choose a stay you would still want without that facility.

Check the journey separately from admission

The return trip is easy to overlook when you’re comparing rooms.

Plan the return journey before choosing a long walk. Admission and transport are separate checks. Establish how you will get back to your accommodation if the day’s access arrangements change.

We found no verified winter timetable suitable for printing here. Use the shuttle guide to understand the different services, then obtain the current departure arrangements for your journey. Do not assume a return service runs until the time a booking page labels as the attraction’s closing hour.

Tell your host which station or meeting point you expect to arrive at. Send the driver the property’s Chinese address and agree the collection point. Save both somewhere you can read without a data connection. If a notice changes access, check whether that collection point still works before setting off.

Keep the trip planning FAQ handy for the wider booking questions. Leave room to change the day’s plan, especially before a fixed train.

Before you set off

Before departure, ask your host for the latest dated notice from the scenic area management or county government, and check the mountain forecast. Repeat the access check on the morning of a mountain outing. If you need help reading a notice, send its full text through your booking conversation, including the date. Ask the host to identify the issuing organisation, not simply say that the mountain is open. The host can help interpret the notice; the issuing authority decides the restriction.

If access remains unclear, you may need to spend the day at your accommodation. Consider postponing the mountain visit before cancellation terms tighten. A village outing also needs its own access and opening checks; it is not automatically available when the mountain is disrupted. Do not set off towards a restricted route while waiting for a reply.

If you have only one free day and must see a particular sight, consider another season or accept that you may miss it. For a quiet stay with optional walks, spend more time checking the room and meals. Compare Moganshan stays once you know what you need the property to provide.
