Getting a car back down: Didi, taxis and the Moganshan pickup problem

Getting up Moganshan is easy. Getting a car back down is not. Didi works, with surcharges reported; most cars cannot pass the barrier from 08:00 to 17:30; budget about RMB 100 to Deqing station.

Most advice on Didi for Moganshan, and on taxis, is about getting there. That part rarely goes wrong. Deqing station has a taxi rank, with the coach bay next door. Getting a car back down is the trip that fails. You are at a guesthouse in a bamboo valley and the last bus has gone. The car that does turn up may want more than the fare.

Moganshan (莫干山) is a mountain in Deqing County (德清县), Huzhou (湖州), Zhejiang Province, about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. The nearest high speed station is Deqing (德清站), about 30 minutes away by road. Moganshan Road in Shanghai, the M50 art district, is a different place 200 km away, and a ride hailing app will happily send a car there.

Why the trip down is harder than the trip up

On the way up you meet the cars at the station. Going down, a car has to find you, in one of several valleys, on a mountain that keeps cars out for most of the day. And not every driver working it is licensed. Nobody here has waited on the mountain for one; this page rests on dated written accounts and our own desk research.

That last point comes from the police, not from us. In June 2025 the deputy head of the Moganshan police station (莫干山派出所) told a provincial paper that black cars (黑车, unlicensed taxis) had troubled the scenic area for years, along with villagers flagging down visitors’ cars to charge them.

Black cars and paid flagging down a long standing problem, Ping An Times (平安时报) on Ping An Zhejiang (平安浙江网), 24 June 2025, tier 2. https://www.pazjw.gov.cn/gongchuangpingan/202506/t20250624_31073840.shtml

A Youxiake (游侠客) guide said as much in June 2020: the ride hailing apps were “not very effective” here, and asked for a premium. Ask a guesthouse or restaurant owner to call a car, it added, and you usually get a local taxi or a black car: pricier, and not always there.

Houwu is about 30 minutes by road from Yucun and its transfer centre, so a car called to the far valleys starts a long way off.

Didi on Moganshan: what the app can and cannot do

Didi (滴滴) works here. The question is on what terms.

The app isn’t the obstacle any more. Set it to English, register with your own phone number and pay by international card, or use the Didi mini programme inside Alipay or WeChat. Chat with the driver is translated both ways. Money and payments covers the foreign card.

It can’t take a car past the barrier. From 08:00 to 17:30 every vehicle stops at a transfer centre unless its passenger has a booking inside and a parking reservation, and a Didi is a vehicle like any other. Before 08:00 and after 17:30 the road is open. The private car ban page has the detail.

Type the destination in Chinese and check it. Deqing station is 德清站. Deqing West (德清西站) is a different station.

All three were paid going up; the one downhill fare in print is in the next section. Budget RMB 100 from a guesthouse to Deqing station, and treat anything less as a saving.

Black cars, and the driver who finds you

Most of the trouble in print comes from cars you did not order. A Youxiake community writer found in 2019 that ride hailing trips to the scenic area mostly cost RMB 20 to 40 extra. On the way up, the driver named the surcharge once the bags were in the boot, and the writer paid. On the way back they agreed RMB 30 to Deqing West before getting in, and paid nothing more. That driver was touting at the transfer centre, and had been reported before for surcharges.

The Moganshan station, with the transport and enforcement departments, has moved against black cars, unlicensed guides and roadside flagging in 27 operations, and counts visitor calls and complaints down 67.3 percent year on year since 2024. That is the station’s own count.

So agree the fare before the bags go in. And prefer a car booked in the app, which has an English support line, to one offered at the roadside.

The order that works on the day you leave

Ask at check in, not at check out. Give the guesthouse your train time and ask what a car to the station costs. It may be a local taxi or a black car, so get the price in a message.

Inside the scenic area, trust the coach. Be on a bus down by 17:00, the last departure on the only board in print, then find your car at the transfer centre, where in 2019 drivers came looking for fares. The shuttle system page has the fares and hours.

From the town, the Y1 bus to Deqing costs RMB 10, and its last return in our August 2026 check left at 17:00. Miss both and the order is Didi with the destination in Chinese, then the guesthouse’s car at a price agreed in writing.

Y1 fare of RMB 10 and return runs from 08:40 to 17:00, BeyondBorder Group Ltd desk research, 1 to 5 August 2026.

At Houwu in December 2025 the bus left when full, otherwise every 30 minutes. Queue early on a busy afternoon.

An early train is the hardest case. Before 08:30 neither the coach nor the Y1 runs, so the only way down is a car. One thing helps: before 08:00 the barrier is open, so a car can come to a door inside the scenic area. Book it the night before, or sleep that night in Wukang, the county seat about 20 km away. Getting around Moganshan covers the rest.
