Moganshan dispatch, week 41

The National Day holiday is over, and Saturday 10 October is a working day across China, so the first weekend after the holiday is a single Sunday. The next busy dates on the mountain are two race weekends, in late October and early November.

The holiday is over, and Saturday 10 October is a working day

The National Day holiday (国庆节) ran from 1 to 7 October. To make up the lost working days, the State Council made Saturday 10 October an ordinary working day. For most people in China, the first weekend after the holiday is Sunday 11 October and nothing more.

No count of holiday visitors had been published by the evening of 7 October: Deqing News (德清新闻网), the county paper, posted nothing new on its listings between 30 September and 7 October.

What this means for a visitor: plan Saturday 10 October as a weekday. Book a Sunday 11 October room or train the way you would book any weekend. Our National Day page has the rest of the autumn calendar.

Mounted police in the forest, and a warning about undeveloped paths

Deqing News reported on 30 September that the county police’s Moganshan mounted unit (莫干山骑警队) would patrol the forest on horseback through the holiday. Moganshan town covers about 190 km², of which about 170 km² is forest, and many of the paths are too narrow for a vehicle. The riders help walkers who are lost or hurt. They also stop people heading onto undeveloped paths (野路) and remind them about fire risk. The paper says the unit rides on public holidays, alongside patrols on foot, by car and by drone.

What this means for a visitor: on a holiday, keep to the built stone paths. Head down an undeveloped track and expect to be turned back. If someone in your group is lost or hurt in the forest, a rider can reach places a vehicle cannot. Our hiking guide explains how the stone paths work and where to get a route.

Two race weekends are next on the calendar

After the holiday, the next big dates on the mountain’s calendar are two races. The Kailas Moganshan Skyrace (凯乐石莫干山跑山赛) runs from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October, based at Yucun (庾村). Its courses run from a 10 km youth race to 100 km. Entries are closed, and so is a later supplementary round. The Spartan Race at Moganshan (斯巴达勇士赛莫干山站) follows on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, with entries open until 23:59 on 31 October. Both dates were checked again on the organisers’ pages on 7 October. The news page carries the details: the Skyrace and the Spartan Race.

What this means for a visitor: for a quiet walk before winter, avoid those two weekends. If you are racing, or staying near Yucun on either weekend, book the room now.

The pool garden at Fotang is still on trial

“Tiankeng Mijing” (天坑秘境), the week’s one opening, is a pool garden with a Southeast Asian theme, built in a disused village power station and kindergarten at Fotang village (佛堂村), in Moganshan town. It was reported here on 1 October. Its first phase covers about 9 mu, roughly 0.6 hectares, and it’s trading on a trial basis. The operator plans a second phase next year with rafting. No report gives its hours or its price, and nothing since has said the trial has ended.

What this means for a visitor: check that it is open, and what it charges, before you drive out. The first report has the rest.

Still no opening date for the railway

The Hangzhou to Deqing railway (杭德市域铁路), the line that will run through onto Hangzhou Metro Line 10, had no news this week. Trains have run without passengers since 1 September, and the target is still “the end of the year”. No opening date and no fare have been announced. The news page reported the trial runs on 7 September.

What this means for a visitor: nothing changes about how you reach Deqing this month. Plan on the high speed train to Deqing station, as in our guide to getting here.
