Moganshan dispatch, week 40

A busy Mid Autumn, and at least one hotel full for National Day

More than 12,000 guests stayed at the Moganshan resort (莫干山度假区) over the three days of Mid Autumn, 25 to 27 September. Deqing News (德清新闻网), the county paper, gives the figure without saying who counted, and no bureau has published one. One pet friendly hotel told the paper it was full for Mid Autumn. The hotel is full again for National Day, and its furthest booking is for March 2027. The street festival at Mogan Yujie (莫干庾街) in Yucun, about 30 stalls with bands and theatre, runs on to 7 October.

Deqing station coped too. It is where most visitors to the mountain arrive. On Mid Autumn day it handled about 12,000 arrivals and departures, some 1,500 more than an ordinary day. The station said nobody was left stranded. Some travellers from Hangzhou left from Deqing instead, because the trains they wanted from Hangzhou East had sold out.

What this means for a visitor: if you have no room for 1 to 7 October, try the days after the 7th before searching inside the holiday week. Tickets from the busiest stations ran short over Mid Autumn, so book the return leg along with the outward one. The crowd calendar on our National Day page still stands.

Persimmon picking opens in Wusi village on 1 October

The Taiqiu sweet persimmon (太秋甜柿) is eaten crisp, like an apple, and lacks the dry, furry taste of an unripe ordinary persimmon. A farm called Huahua Shijie (花花世界) in Wusi village (五四村), in Moganshan town, has its first real crop this year. The farm has about 70 mu of trees, some 4.7 hectares, and expects around 20,000 kg. The fruit went on sale in late September and the harvest runs to the end of October. It sells there for RMB 20 to 40 a kilo. Picking opens to the public from National Day. The report gives no hours, and no separate price for picking your own.

What this means for a visitor: you can pick fruit outside the ticketed scenic area through the holiday week and the rest of October. Ask your host whether the farm is open before you set off. The chestnut picking in the same town runs to about mid October.

About a third of the guesthouses now have rails and non slip floors

Around a third of Moganshan’s guesthouses (民宿, the family run rooms that fill the villages) have been adapted for older guests, the county paper reported. That means grab rails in the bathroom, non slip floors and an emergency call button, and food cooked with less oil and salt. The report gives no count of houses. Xinhua, the same day, counted nearly 900 licensed guesthouses around the mountain, but the two figures may not rest on the same list. Neither report names a house that has made the change.

What this means for a visitor: anyone who needs a rail or a level floor should ask for an adapted room when booking, and for a photograph of the bathroom. Our accessibility page has the rest of the questions.

The railway is still aiming for the end of the year

Last week we reported that the Hangzhou to Deqing railway (杭德市域铁路) had no opening date. It still has none. But the county has repeated its target. On 22 September the county culture and tourism bureau (县文广旅体局) went to Hangzhou to launch a campaign called “Take the metro to Deqing” (乘着地铁游德清). The bureau said the line is expected to open by the end of this year. Eighteen of the line’s 21 trains are now in the depot at Wuyang (舞阳车辆基地), and all 21 are due by the end of October. FM93, the provincial traffic radio station, ran the same target on 29 September. The line has nine stations and ends at Deqing high speed station. Its trains will run through onto Hangzhou Metro Line 10.

The shops above Chunhui Park station, in the county town of Wukang, opened as promised, and parking there is free during the trial. As part of its metro campaign the bureau also put more than 80 places on a digital map, inside the WeChat account Wenlü Deqing (文旅德清) under the menu item Wenlü Ditu (文旅地图). The map is in Chinese only.

What this means for a visitor: nothing changes for a trip in October or November. Deqing station on the high speed line is still the way in. Neither a date nor a fare has been published, so for a December trip, watch for both.

Leave the ginkgo nuts where they fall

The ginkgo trees along Deqing’s town streets and in its parks are dropping ripe nuts (白果), and people are shaking the branches to collect them. Song Jindong (宋金东), who heads gastroenterology at the county people’s hospital, warned people off on 24 September. The kernel carries a toxin. Even a small amount can numb the lips and cause nausea and stomach pain; more can bring on trembling and fits, and children react more strongly. The fresh flesh around the nut can raise a rash. It may take hours to show, sometimes two days. Nuts from roadside trees also take up heavy metals from exhaust and dust.

What this means for a visitor: do not pick them up or peel them, and keep children away from them. If you have to touch one, wear gloves. If a rash or nausea follows, see a doctor.
