The osmanthus on Moganshan was in flower by 16 September 2026, some weeks before the same trees open in the towns below.
Deqing News (德清新闻网) reported on 18 September that a reporter at Luhuadang Park (芦花荡公园), inside the scenic area, found the trees along both sides of the path in full flower that morning, the scent carrying in waves, with visitors stopping to photograph them.
The paper puts more than seven hundred osmanthus trees (桂花) on the mountain, across golden, silver and four season varieties, and gives the main flush as mid September to early November. It names two places to go for it: Luhuadang Park and Sword Pool (剑池).
The reason the mountain runs ahead is temperature. Osmanthus needs a spell of cold before it will open, and the mountain is high enough that the nights turn cold there first. This rests on a single source, the county paper, at tier 2. The tree count and the flowering window are its figures rather than a bureau’s, and no county portal check was possible: deqing.gov.cn timed out on every listing from here. The town weather page at 中国天气网, the usual temperature check, returned a 403.
The practical caution is a different one. Both of the places the paper names sit inside the ticketed scenic area, so the scent costs the price of admission, and what that price is depends on which source you read. A flowering window running into November also means this is not a weekend to chase. If the first week of October is the only week you can travel, the crowds will be the thing you notice, not the trees.
What this means for a visitor: If the scent is what you are coming for, you have weeks rather than a single weekend, and the two places the county paper names are both inside the ticketed scenic area.
