Weekly dispatch, Week 44, 2026

Moganshan dispatch, week 44

Thursday to Saturday are forecast dry and mild, and rain returns on Sunday. Spartan Race entries close at midnight on Saturday, and the county paper now reports the Skyrace field at 15,000 in its own words.

Three dry days, then rain from Sunday

The national forecast for Deqing, issued on Wednesday 28 October, has no rain until Sunday. Thursday 29 October is cloudy turning sunny, 14 to 24 °C. Friday and Saturday are sunny, 13 to 26 °C. Light rain arrives on Sunday 1 November, still mild at 14 to 26 °C. Monday starts sunny and turns to light rain, 12 to 21 °C. Tuesday 3 November is the wettest day in the forecast, light rain turning moderate, with a high of 18 °C.

The National Meteorological Centre (中央气象台) has the same pattern: sun on Friday and Saturday, light rain on Sunday, rain again on Monday night and moderate rain on Tuesday. Both forecasts are for the county town. The mountain is higher and usually cooler.

What this means for a visitor: put the long walk on Friday or Saturday, carry a layer for the morning, and pack a rain jacket for Sunday and the start of next week.

Spartan Race entries close at midnight on Saturday

The Spartan Race (斯巴达勇士赛) runs on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November in the Moganshan International Tourist Resort. Entries close at 23:59 on Saturday 31 October. The registration page, read again on 28 October, lists the start times but names no start venue. The 50 km race with 60 obstacles starts at 08:30 on Saturday. The 21 km, 10 km and 5 km races go in waves between 09:30 and 15:00 on Saturday, and between 08:30 and 14:00 on Sunday.

We found no traffic notice for the race weekend by Wednesday evening.

What this means for a visitor: enter by Saturday night if you want to race; if you don’t, treat 7 and 8 November as a busy weekend and expect runners on the paths from early morning to mid afternoon on both days.

The Skyrace drew 40,000 applications for 15,000 places

The Kailas Moganshan Skyrace (凯乐石莫干山跑山赛) finished on Sunday 25 October. Last week we could print its field of 15,000 only as the shopping street’s figure. Deqing News (德清新闻网) now gives it in its own reporting: about 40,000 people applied for 15,000 places, and more than 30,000 of them applied on the first day entries opened. The first race, in 2017, had 800 runners.

The same report says the mountain has ten trail routes totalling 269.3 km and a mountain bike downhill track with a drop of 170 m, and that the county expects about 40 trail events in 2026, up from 15 in 2025. One guesthouse in the report says it is full for October and November. That is one house, not the mountain.

A new route came out of the race weekend: the news desk has reported a 33 km training line from Yucun, open all year, with no published map yet.

What this means for a visitor: if you hope to run the Skyrace in 2027, apply on the day entries open: more than twice as many people applied as got a place.

Still no word on visa free entry after 31 December

Nine weeks before it lapses, we have found no announcement extending the 30 day visa free scheme beyond 2026. The question and answer page kept by the Chinese consulate in San Francisco, last revised in June, lists 50 countries. Brunei has no end date and Russia runs to 31 December 2027. For the other 48, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Australia and Japan among them, entry ends at midnight on 31 December 2026. The last extension was announced in early November 2025, eight weeks before the previous end date. Our visa free entry page has the rules as they stand.

What this means for a visitor: if you plan to enter without a visa after 31 December, keep that part of the trip refundable until an extension is announced, and check the list for your passport.
