On 17 December 2024 China folded its 72 hour and 144 hour transit schemes into one 240 hour rule. Ten days, counted in hours, for 55 nationalities including the United States. It covers 24 provinces and municipalities, Shanghai and Zhejiang among them, with free movement across those lines.
All of it rests on one condition, a confirmed ticket onward to a third country. A round trip home does not qualify.
The transit rule changed twice in thirteen months. It is the entry rule most likely to move again, and the visa free entry page is where the current version lives.
What this means for a visitor: On a US passport this is the route in, short of a visa. Shanghai and Zhejiang are both covered, so Shanghai to Hangzhou to Moganshan stays inside the scheme, provided you hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country.
