Quiet and comfortable around it. We had the best value of the family rooms. It rained, so the main sights were out, and we stayed in and sat on the terrace with local yellow bud tea listening to the rain, watching the hills go soft under the cloud. A pleasure of its own. The rain stopped and we walked by the stream, which was restorative.

Villa 160 is the house we dream about, built of stone on the top of the hill with big trees round the courtyard, cool and quiet. The room faces the sun and in the evening the sky fills with light. The stonework inside is five star, the bedding is clean and comfortable, and the bathroom has been kept like new. The meals are the best part. Breakfast came to as much as I would have taken from a buffet, small dishes of it, and dinner used vegetables from the garden and fresh fish. The house sits above the Queen's Hotel where Chairman Mao stayed. The old judgment about the site was right: this is a place to recover in.

A guesthouse tucked inside the scenic area with real life to it and a story behind it. The position is superb, right inside the area, so getting anywhere is easy. The owner is thoroughly decent and cooks breakfast himself, clean and good. I was getting up early to climb and told his wife two bowls of congee and an egg would do, and she went to the trouble of stir frying two dishes for us. Genuinely warm and sincere. The best of a trip is not only the scenery but the people you meet, and this was a comfortable and memorable stay. Strongly recommended.

Service: five stars. The manager met us at the car park and carried our bags up. Meals have to be ordered a day ahead, and every day they checked in about what we were doing and asked whether we wanted dinner the next day. The setting is good hill country, which is what you come to a guesthouse for. The building and the decoration are in a new Chinese style. Very good value. It is at Houwu, not far from the scenic area, within twenty minutes drive of the visitor transfer centre. Houwu is honestly the more interesting place in the evening, with a market, an open air bar, barbecue, crayfish and beer, and village theatre. I would recommend staying there. The hotel has three floors of rooms plus one on the roof terrace, an indoor games area downstairs with table football, small pool, darts and Lego, and an outdoor seating area, though it is too hot to sit out during the day and only works once there is a breeze in the evening. Reliable hot water, strong air conditioning and a generous breakfast. Well suited to a family driving trip.
