The ground floor room smells of mould, there is no hot water at the basin, and there is effectively no soundproofing at all. When anyone upstairs runs water the pump downstairs is loud enough to hear clearly from the room. The ceiling is timber, so footsteps upstairs creak. The curtains block no light whatsoever. My third time at Moganshan, and I wanted a night near Yucun square to make going out and eating easier. I picked this because it has almost no bad reviews and because our family could take the whole building, which I thought would give us some privacy. The stay was ordinary. On the fittings: it has been open close to eight years and it shows, with a lot of the furniture and fittings broken. It is very basic, a stripped down guesthouse, the shower runs at a trickle and the toilet backs up. On cleanliness: it never felt clean. It is a converted granary and a lot of the glass in the glass room is broken. The cafe in the communal area is cleaner and better kept than the rooms. On the layout: it is small, two rooms upstairs and down, and badly thought out. Unless you are all one family it would be strange, because you share a sitting room, the upstairs guests have to come down for the bathroom, and the stairs are open, so from the sitting room you watch people going up and down. Almost no privacy. The house opens straight onto the lane, the outside door has no lock and neither does the first floor balcony door, which worried me. On service: they only added me on messaging after the platform told them to, and an extra quilt costs more. The upstairs room is glass, so in hot weather the air conditioning cannot bring the temperature down, and with a thick quilt anyone who feels the heat will sleep badly. The curtains let light through and you are woken early. Breakfast is a coffee and a burger, and anything else is charged separately. On the whole, more disappointment than expectation. At this price and in this area I would pick the Radisson, which is at least a brand. Bread is what this place is good at.

A weekend of playing in water with the children, three hours drive from Shanghai. We arrived after one and checked straight in. The room is bright and very clean. I had ordered dinner ahead and she cooked it herself and cooks very well, with organic vegetables from her own garden. I rarely write reviews, but the owner here is so good that I have to. I was here for the Moganshan trail race. I booked late, so everywhere near the start was expensive, and the price here looked reasonable. It is a fair way from the race village on Yuxin North Street, but he drove me there himself on the morning of the race. He took ten yuan for it, which is nominal. A taxi would have cost far more and at that hour in a spot that remote you could not have got one at all. He is a warm man. I had come from Hangzhou and needed water to carry in the race, and when I asked to buy some he simply gave me three bottles. That kind of thing tells you what sort of person he is. On the rooms: he has three houses. Mine was a king room, and the shower gel and shampoo in the bathroom are proper brands in full sized bottles rather than sachets, with some skincare on the counter as well. There seemed to be no toothbrush or hand soap, so bear that in mind. He volunteers at the race every year and knows it well, so ring him beforehand. One more thing. It is remote and there is nowhere nearby to buy a quick meal. I had not brought instant noodles, so I asked about dinner and he said sixty a head, which I thought fair, and it turned out to be a full spread, far more than one person needs. Photographs attached. We picked this place at the foot of the hill and it was better than we expected. It is kept very tidy, the rooms are clean and fresh, and the care shows in the details. The outdoor pool is clear and properly maintained, so you can spend spare time in the water. The atmosphere is warm and restful, and the family who run it are friendly, easy going and honest, and will patiently sort out whatever you need. They keep two or three dogs and a cat, all gentle and soft natured. My little one was besotted with the cat and played with it constantly, which added a lot to the trip. It is away from the noise, quiet and secluded, and suits a short family break, whether you want to sit and do nothing or let a child get near some animals. A very good stay, and my first thought next time we are in the area.

We came out of the heat with the family and the children. This place is very good. It opened this year, the setting is lovely, the pool is big and the children loved it, and there is a wide grass area that photographs beautifully. The family who run it are friendly and breakfast is good, with the noodles and wontons wrapped fresh. We had planned on two nights and stayed four because the children would not leave the pool. First choice, and an honest review.

Very comfortable room, fully equipped, good soundproofing, and easy if you drive because they have their own parking. The communal areas are covered by cameras. Very clean rooms and the couple are lovely and welcoming. Their dog Kaixin is affectionate and a delight. Breakfast was good. Five kilometres from Yucun and about three hundred metres from the Longtan, so it is easy if you drive.
