Moganshan was somewhere I had long wanted to go, and this was a poor experience. I regretted this guesthouse as soon as I arrived. The position is bad, there is no pool or anything of that kind, and worst of all the room faced west and was unbearable in the afternoon, along with other episodes. For that position and setting the price is high. The only thing I was happy with was the owner's manner. Nothing else worked.

The steps in the room are easy to trip on and there is nothing marking them. The pool is big, 1.5 metres at the deep end, with free rings and water pistols, though the slide is decorative: with no water running it is only friction. Not many places manage no bad reviews at all, so I booked without hesitating. The owner cleaned two ground floor rooms that had just been vacated and moved our elderly guests into them, which was genuinely thoughtful. Two nights, with country cooking for one lunch and two dinners. Her cooking is superb, the chicken is their own and one is more than you can finish. She is a decent sort, and on the second morning she made chicken soup noodles for my husband, who does not like congee. Coming in out of the summer heat the room was cool and comfortable. After dinner the entertainment starts: singing, games, mahjong, and the pool is where the children run riot. The water circulates around the clock and was cleaner than I expected. Next time at Moganshan I will pick this place again. Thank you to the couple for running it with such care and hosting us so warmly.

Stayed here one night prior to attending to UTMB Moganshan. This hotel is literally on the starting line. Very kind local owners/emoloyees of the hotel. Basic amenities, but didn’t need more. A bed, and bathroom was all I needed.

The setting is first rate. The courtyard fence is covered in flowers of a lot of different kinds and it has clearly been tended carefully. There is an enormous pool, clear and bright, though it was too cold to get in, and it must be wonderful in summer. The room is very clean and it is quiet at night, so I slept until I woke on my own. A very comfortable stay in a place with real design to it. The whole building is laid out unusually and there are surprises everywhere. I fell asleep on the sofa in the first floor lounge, and there is karaoke there too. The tea room on the top floor has a stove for brewing when it turns cold. It suits a small group coming up here to unwind, and the setting, the fittings and the service are all easy. You open your eyes to green hills a few steps away. This weekend put me back together and I forgot about work entirely. Breakfast is generous and healthy, and I ordered lunch here too, which was good and came in enormous portions. I have recommended it to friends without hesitation. It is worth the trip and it is only ten to twenty minutes by car from the main scenic areas. The manager is a chatty, welcoming young woman.

A fair way from the food and drink below and further still from the visitor centre, close to half an hour on foot and certainly more than a kilometre, so driving is easier. The area is quiet but the rooms are not well soundproofed. There is a bath in the room, but the tap ran barely warm and at a trickle, so a soak was out of the question. The room was fairly clean, though the bathroom window is not fully enclosed and light comes in early. The views are decent. The owner is warm, the price is not low, and overall it was passable.

I will not bother describing the setting, since the photographs are real. It is very good, and the hills through the floor to ceiling window look like a painting. There is also a pool, so pack a swimsuit. On the food: the owner's mother makes a shredded pumpkin pancake with pickles that I have not stopped thinking about since. I have promised to come back in autumn for it. The fruit was fresh, and when I said I fancied watermelon he simply handed me half of one.

The owner's service is thoughtful and thorough, and the country breakfast and home cooking are the real thing. The grandmother who runs the guesthouse was wonderful. Breakfast was delicious and she added wild bamboo shoots, which tasted superb. In the morning she even took us out to pick tea and dig shoots. We had a great time. The rooms were clean and welcoming too.

A work weekend at this hot spring guesthouse, and it went beyond what we expected on every count. The rooms are built on soft arches with a real sense of style, and the floor to ceiling windows and the balcony open onto bamboo and green hills, so the outlook is excellent. Clean tidy rooms, with careful and comfortable furnishing, good light and good privacy. The communal areas are designed with the same care, arched throughout with lighting to match, and there is a lounge and a separate meeting room with a projector, so meetings and downtime both work. The space is generous and it photographs well. The two main meals used fresh local ingredients, with plenty of mountain vegetables and seafood, honest portions and flavours that suit most people. The outdoor pool backs onto the woods, and gathering there at dusk with the wind coming off the hill was the best part of it. The staff respond quickly and handle the food and the meeting arrangements in one, so it suits a company weekend, a group of friends or a small business meeting. First choice next time.

With two children on holiday, choosing the right place matters. There is a pool, and they could not get their swimming things on fast enough. A hundred metres from the door there is a stream, shallow and safe, where they spent hours catching shrimp. The rooms are clean and fresh with everything you need, and two adults and two children fit comfortably. The family are honest and welcoming, and breakfast is simple but very good, with far too much of it because he was afraid we would go hungry. Dinner can be ordered ahead and is proper country cooking. On the first day we saw a double rainbow, so twice the luck. Somewhere I will keep coming back to, and I recommend it to anyone travelling with children.

A perfect stay. The owner is welcoming, the service is first rate, and the little courtyard has real character and is a pleasure to sit in. There is a pool room, a mahjong table and a pool, which covers adults and children alike. My suggestion would be to lay on breakfast with some local country food and put it in the room rate, since as it stands you have to drive out for it. The curtains do not block much light either and could be replaced, because it comes in as soon as it gets light.

A summer trip with the grandparents and the children, in a suite. Clean tidy room, and breakfast was solid, the standard guesthouse spread. My mother liked the pickled greens with bamboo shoots. The private pool works for children and adults alike. Best of all the position is superb, five minutes drive from the rafting and the toboggan at Yaowu.
