Moganshan in one day from Shanghai: is it viable, hour by hour

Is a Moganshan day trip from Shanghai viable? Yes, from central Shanghai, and only on one shape of day. Leave on the 08:11 from Shanghai South, take a taxi rather than the bus at Deqing, ride the 17:00 Y1 bus down from Moganshan town and catch the 18:27 home. That gives you nearly seven hours in Moganshan, four of them up on the hill, and costs about RMB 400 a head in fares and the ticket, or RMB 350 each for two. From Pudong the answer is no. Allow 4 hours to 4 hours 45 minutes each way from there, which leaves too little day, as Shanghai to Moganshan sets out.

Moganshan (莫干山) is a mountain in Deqing County (德清县), Huzhou (湖州), Zhejiang Province (浙江省), about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. Moganshan Road, the M50 art district in Shanghai’s Putuo District, is a different place. Your station is Deqing (德清站), not Deqing West (德清西) in Wukang, as Deqing station: which exit, which taxi, which bus explains.

Both trains have a fallback. Neither is free. Miss the 08:11 and the 09:35 from Hongqiao takes an hour and a half off the hill. Miss the 18:27 and you wait for the 21:16, which still gets you home, late. Door to door from central Shanghai runs 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes each way, so five and a half to seven hours of the day goes on moving.

Build the day backwards

Most one day plans start at the alarm clock. That is the wrong end. The return is what fails, so this one starts from the last vehicle out.

Read the second and third rows together. The last coach down from the top and the last Y1 out of the town leave at the same minute, a coach ride apart. Ride the last coach and you have missed the last bus to the station. Our own August check gave the centres a longer day, to 18:00, but no dated source repeats it, and an open office is no use once the buses have stopped. Plan to 17:00 in the town, and to well before it at the top.

The one decision at Deqing station

Forget the early buses. The 07:30 is out of reach from Shanghai, and the 08:40 only on the G3091, which leaves Hongqiao at 06:20 and reaches Deqing at 07:36. That means leaving central Shanghai before 05:30. The D377 leaves Shanghai South (上海南), not Hongqiao (虹桥), and lands at 09:19, after both early buses have gone. That leaves two ways to cover the last 18 km or so from the coach centre beside the station, where the Y1 and the taxis wait.

The taxi saves little time on paper. What it saves is twenty minutes on a bench, and the risk that a late train costs you the 09:40 with nothing until 10:40 behind it. With a bed at the end of the trip, take the bus. On a day trip, pay for the taxi.

The day, hour by hour

Lunch at the top is thin: one restaurant on Yinshan Street has recent reviews and one has none, and where to eat on Moganshan names them. Yucun has more, which is one more reason to come down early.

The two rows that break the day

The first is 09:35. Everything before it is a chain with no slack: a slow ride to Shanghai South pushes the security queue, and a missed 08:11 takes an hour and a half off the hill.

The second is 14:30, the row people argue with. Coming down at half past two, with coaches running until five, looks timid. It isn’t. No timetable we could find prints how long the coach takes from Yinshan Street to the transfer centre, and at five o’clock the last coach and the last Y1 leave together. Come down early and the problem goes away, because the Y1 leaves from the centre the coach brings you to. Two spare hours in Yucun are no hardship. The ticket figures disagree too. In 2023 the window price was RMB 80 and the coach up and back RMB 35, and older and newer figures differ from both. Moganshan tickets in 2026 has every figure with its source. Buy at the window or through the scenic area ticket page, and check the price there.

What the day costs

Here is the bill, one adult, second class, from the same sources.

That is about RMB 400 alone, or RMB 350 each for two sharing the taxi, before lunch. The ticket line is the soft one: it rests on 2023 window prices. First class adds about RMB 100 (RMB 132 out, RMB 143 back).

If you miss the 18:27

A missed evening train is not a night in Deqing. After half past four, four trains leave Deqing for Shanghai on a weekday and five on a Saturday.

Nothing leaves after the 21:16. The 17:23 is out of reach on the 17:00 bus, but a taxi from the transfer centre by 16:30 can make it, traffic allowing, and puts you in Hongqiao nearly an hour earlier. Miss the 18:27 on a weekday and you face almost three hours in a station café. Book the train home when you book the train out.

The same day from Hangzhou

Based in Hangzhou? A different trip, and a much easier morning. Fourteen trains a day run from Hangzhou East (杭州东) to Deqing, 06:50 to 21:40, in 13 or 14 minutes. The G3192 at 07:29 lands at 07:42, in time for the 08:40 Y1, which puts you on the hill nearly an hour earlier than the Shanghai day. Second class on it is RMB 17.

Coming back is the catch. After the G821 at 16:55, nothing leaves Deqing for Hangzhou East until the D2245 at 20:14. Hangzhou West (杭州西) is better served in that window, with the G1677 at 17:56 and the G1419 at 18:44. What one day cannot hold

Seven hours buys the villa streets, Sword Pond, one park, lunch at the top and most of two hours in Yucun.
