Moganshan vs Wuzhen: mountain or water town

Wuzhen is a canal town run as one resort, with 19 direct trains a day from Hongqiao to its station. Moganshan is a lived in mountain of guesthouses, with six. Choose Wuzhen for an evening, Moganshan for walking.

Chinese weekend guides set Moganshan and Wuzhen side by side, as if they were rival versions of one thing: a night out of Shanghai, old houses and quiet. They are not the same thing. Wuzhen is a canal town that one company runs as a resort. Moganshan is a mountain where people still live, with nearly 900 licensed guesthouses scattered through its villages.

So Moganshan vs Wuzhen is really a question about what you want from the evening, and how much of the trip you’re willing to spend on a bus.

Moganshan (莫干山) is in Deqing County (德清县), Huzhou (湖州), Zhejiang, about 60 km north of Hangzhou and 200 to 240 km from Shanghai. Wuzhen (乌镇) is a water town in Tongxiang (桐乡), part of Jiaxing (嘉兴), about 78 km east of Moganshan by road. Neither is Moganshan Road in Shanghai, the M50 art district, which takes the name in English search results.

Why the two get set side by side

Distance does most of it. Each is a weekend’s reach from Shanghai and promises old buildings and a slow evening. The Chinese guides that pair them mostly read alike, too. We looked at the top results for the obvious searches (莫干山还是乌镇, Moganshan or Wuzhen) on 31 October 2026. Nearly all were Weibo and Sina template pages headed “tested” (实测) and ending in a FAQ; one carried a line saying it was generated by AI. None was usable as a source.

The real difference is ownership. Wuzhen West was rebuilt as a single resort: to do it, the developer bought out the residents’ titles and moved more than 1,000 households outside the zone. Today all the lodging inside West is managed by the operator, Wuzhen Tourism, and sold through its own channels. Its booking site counted 13 hotels, hostels and guesthouses inside West in 2023, the largest with 345 rooms.

Moganshan works the other way. Xiantan (仙潭), one of its guesthouse villages, had 158 guesthouses and more than 2,100 residents in 2021. Its 10 restaurants and 5 farms sit among the houses of people who live there.

Wuzhen also keeps a calendar of its own. It has hosted the World Internet Conference (世界互联网大会) every November since 2014. In 2026 the summit runs from 2 to 5 November, and West and its rooms are given over to it: ticket sales stop at noon on 1 November and normal opening returns after noon on 5 November. East stays open. Each October there is also the Wuzhen Theatre Festival (乌镇戏剧节), 15 to 25 October in 2026.

On Moganshan the day runs on the coach clock: the last one down leaves at 17:00, five hours before Wuzhen West closes.

Getting to each

On the train, Wuzhen is the easier trip. It has no station of its own (China Railway’s station list has no 乌镇), but Tongxiang station sits on the Shanghai to Hangzhou high speed line and is served far more often than Deqing.

The bus from Tongxiang station is the weak link, and Wuzhen’s own notices disagree about it. One from March 2025 gives the K282 from 06:00 to 17:05, 24 trips a day; one from July 2025 gives 06:00 to 18:50 and 48 trips. The fare was RMB 5 and the ride about 50 minutes in 2019, the last dated figure we found. From the bus station another line, K350, runs on to the old town.

On Moganshan the catch is the last stretch. From 08:00 to 17:30 cars may not drive into the scenic area; day visitors change at a transfer centre and ride a coach up, and the last one down leaves at 17:00. Our shuttle guide has the detail. Pick your train on the live Hongqiao to Deqing timetable with that clock in mind, because with six direct trains a day there is little slack.

Wuzhen has its own car rule, though nobody calls it that: outside vehicles cannot enter the scenic area at all. You park at the edge and walk in.

What a day costs at each

Wuzhen’s prices are on record; Moganshan’s own channels would not load for us. The Wuzhen figures rest on a dated 2018 price change and a 2025 report that still gives them. The Moganshan ones are older reports, dated as such.

On those figures a day on Moganshan comes to RMB 130 a person: gate, coach and loop bus. A day in both halves of Wuzhen comes to RMB 190, or RMB 250 with one boat ride. Children under about 1.2 m and anyone aged 70 or over get in free at both gates, on the same two Bendibao pages. Our tickets page explains why no current Moganshan price can be confirmed.

Staying the night changes the Wuzhen sum. From 16 March 2025, guests at any hotel or guesthouse inside West (the Shuixiang youth hostel, 水巷青年旅馆, excepted) enter West without a ticket, Caijing reported, and West stays open until 22:00. The operator’s own FAQ page, which carries no date, still said on 31 October 2026 that guests must buy one. Ask when you book.

Who should choose which

Choose Wuzhen if the evening is the point. West stays open until 22:00, and the operator has added boats and night shows to fill it. It also suits a short trip. The fastest train from Hongqiao takes 33 minutes, and one night is enough. Go to West rather than East if you can. East is the older sightseeing route, and the one where tour groups concentrate, according to the operator.

The honest negative is crowds. Over National Day 2025, Wuzhen was one of the ten Zhejiang scenic areas with the most visitors a day, according to the provincial culture department. If you can, go on an ordinary weekend.

The ten busiest, Tide News (潮新闻), 10 October 2025, tier 2. https://www.hzsc.com.cn/content/content_9843390.html

Choose Moganshan if the walking is the point. The paths start at the guesthouse door. The hill station has the old stone villas; our is it worth it page is blunt about who will be bored. There is almost nothing to do after dinner, the weekends fill, and the coaches stop in the late afternoon.

A free shuttle links West and East, 09:00 to 16:30 from October to April and until 17:00 in summer. After that, the 3.5 km between them is up to you.

Doing both in one trip

It can be done, but there is no direct link. No train runs between Deqing and Tongxiang, and we found no bus. By road, Yucun to Wuzhen West is 77.8 km. Without a car, go through Hangzhou East: Deqing to Hangzhou East is 13 to 15 minutes, Hangzhou East to Tongxiang 17 to 25, then the bus. That is three changes, so allow a morning.

Road distance, OpenStreetMap measurement; trains, the 12306 timetable queried 31 October 2026; BeyondBorder Group Ltd desk research.

Do it in the order the trains favour. Wuzhen first, from Hongqiao, for one night inside West. Then Moganshan for two nights, and home from Deqing. Our weekend from Shanghai plans the Moganshan half hour by hour, and Moganshan vs Anji covers the other neighbour. Sleep on the mountain through the rooms in the Moganshan resort zone on Trip.com.

A rail line may change the sums one day. The planned Water Town Tourism Line (水乡旅游线) is to run through Wuzhen to Hangzhou’s airport; work on its Jiangsu section began on 30 June 2025 with four years allowed, and no date has been given for a Wuzhen stop.
